Why UConn can cover

UConn was incredibly dominant in the season-opening win over Central Connecticut. The Huskies shot 61.5 percent from 3-point range and, when the Huskies missed, they grabbed more than half of their missed shots on the offensive glass. Sophomore forward Adama Sanogo led the team with 20 points in the opener, with RJ Cole putting up 15 points of his own.

UConn returns six of the top seven scores from the 2020-21 squad, and the Huskies ranked as a top-30 team in the country in adjusted offense and defensive efficiency last season. On defense, UConn forced a turnover on more than 40 percent of possessions in the opener, and while that isn't a sustainable figure, the Huskies are athletic, physical and capable of creating havoc against Coppin State.

Why Coppin State can cover

Coppin State has strengths on both ends, dating back to the larger sample of the 2020-21 season. The Eagles played at the fastest tempo in college basketball last season, also ranking No. 2 in the nation in free-throw creation rate. Coppin State shot very well on 2-point attempts (51.6 percent) in 2020-21, with UConn ranking as a below-average unit in 2-point shooting allowed. UConn also struggled mightily on the defensive glass last season, which could open the door to second-chance points.

On the other end, Coppin State was above-average in turnover creation rate (20.4 percent) and free-throw prevention last season, also holding opponents to less than 31 percent shooting from 3-point range. UConn was below average in both free-throw creation and prevention last season, which could also play into Coppin State's hands on Saturday.
