College football scores, rankings, highlights: Auburn storms back vs. LSU, Clemson avoids catastrophe

Just a week after needing late heroics to knock off Georgia State, No. 22 Auburn went on the road Saturday night and scored 14 fourth-quarter points to storm back to beat LSU 24-19. The dramatic come-from-behind victory marked Auburn's first in Death Valley since 1999. The visiting Tigers rallied from a 13-0 first-half deficit behind masterful quarterback play from Bo Nix, who had been benched in a dismal performance the week before.

Nix threw for 255 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 74 more and another score, to give first-year Auburn coach Bryan Harsin an early marquee victory. But the statistics hardly tell the story of Nix's heroics. The embattled starter regularly evaded pressure -- sometimes in miraculous ways -- to extend plays and find receivers.

Elsewhere, No. 25 Clemson narrowly avoided another nightmare, squeaking out a 19-13 win over Boston College. A loss would have dropped Clemson to 2-3 for the first time since 2010, and surely out of the rankings for the first time since 2014, but the Eagles fumbled a snap while driving late in the fourth quarter for a potential game-winning score. Instead, Clemson's 30-game home winning streak increased to 31 thanks in large part to another strong defensive outing.

Auburn outlasts LSU in Baton Rouge

For the first time since 1999, Auburn went on the road to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and beat the hometown LSU Tigers. Auburn QB Bo Nix had one of the best games of his career with 255 yards passing, 74 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. Nix led a 92-yard touchdown drive with 3:11 remaining to score the go-ahead touchdown.

For LSU, the loss is just the latest disaster since winning the national championship. The Louisianan Tigers are just 6-6 in SEC play since winning the 2019 national championship, including 1-4 against ranked opponents. The 3-2 LSU Tigers still have five ranked opponents left on the schedule, including Florida, Arkansas and Alabama.

No. 20 Bruins trailing at half

HALF: Arizona State 24, No. 20 UCLA 23

Arizona State was ranked a few weeks ago. The Sun Devils are showing they want to be back in the polls after taking a first-half lead over UCLA. Highly-touted ASU quarterback Jaydon Daniels has 210 yards and two touchdowns through the first half. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has 124 yards and both touchdowns, clearing his total season production to this point. UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson has 159 yards passing, 64 yards rushing and a touchdown. The two teams combined for 41 points in the second quarter.

Fun ones late

Big fan of the SEC After Dark providing an alternative to the Pac-12. But both UCLA-Arizona State and Auburn-LSU are good games. LSU is clinging to a 19-10 lead as Auburn drives to begin the fourth quarter. UCLA and Arizona State are tied at 17 late in the first half. Both are big division games with plenty of weirdness already and more on deck.

UCLA up early

The No. 20 Bruins are up 10-3 early on Arizona State in a big Pac-12 South game. The Sun Devils' field goal came courtesy of a UCLA fumble as ASU has struggled to move the ball so far. Bruins looking for their first three-game winning streak in the series since 2000-2003.

Penn State blanks Indiana

Alright, it's official. Penn State vs. Iowa next week will be a top-five matchup for the first time ever. Iowa will be entering after forcing seven turnovers in a win over Maryland on Friday. The Nittany Lions will be entering off a 24-0 blanking of Indiana. Very impressive defense tonight, but the offense is still a work in progress for PSU. That game next week could be real ugly unless you're a defense lover.

Clemson survives BC

Final: No. 25 Clemson 19, Boston College 13

Clemson narrowly avoided another nightmare on Saturday night as the Tigers squeaked out a win over BC when BC fumbled a snap while driving late in the fourth quarter for a potential game-winning score. A loss would have dropped Clemson to 2-3 for the first time since 2010. A 30-game home winning streak barely increases to 31. Offense remains a concern as DJU finishes just 13-of-28 through the air. But that BC team was 4-0 and coming in off a win vs. Missouri. So, all in all, a good win for Clemson.

Auburn and LSU tight at halftime

Half: LSU 13, No. 22 Auburn 10

LSU jumped out to a lead on No. 22 Auburn on the heels of 31-yard touchdown pass from Max Johnson to Kayshon Boutte, followed by two Cade York field goals. Auburn battled back on the heels of one of the most ridiculous touchdown passes you'll ever see. Bo Nix, who entered the game in a battle with T.J. Finley for the top spot of the depth chart, rolled right, eluded pressure, pump faked a defender, rolled left, was hemmed in on the sideline and then found Tyler Fromm for a 24-yard touchdown. Anders Carlson would add a field goal shorly before halftime to make it a 13-10 game at the half.

Another big game for KWIII

Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III is feasting again. The Wake Forest transfer is over 100 yards rushing in the fourth quarter as the Spartans are fending off Western Kentucky 45-24. Not over yet, but it sure looks like Mel Tucker's squad is going to improve to 5-0. This is the third time Walker's gone over 100 yards for the Spartans, and he's officially run for more yards this season than he did in either of his seasons with the Demon Deacons.

Ridiculous touchdown

This absurd play from Bo Nix gets Auburn on the board and provides it with some momentum. He's split reps with Finley tonight, but Nix was really good on the TD drive. LSU has been good through the air but can't get anything going on the ground.

Oklahoma State moves to 5-0

Final: No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 21 Baylor 14

The Big 12's nightcap was the defensive battle it was anticipated to be, and in the end, Oklahoma State came out on top to move to 5-0. The Cowboys' defense was the star of the show, holding Baylor to just 298 yards of offense. But Mike Gundy's offense did get some big performances out of running back Jaylen Warren (36 carries, 125 yards, 2 TDs) and receiver Tay Martin (8 catches, 110 yards). It's taken a bit of time to discover who the "dudes" are on the offense, but Warren looks like that guy in a loaded backfield. The Cowboys are off next week before traveling to Texas. Could this be the year Mike Gundy's squad makes it to Arlington?

Mississippi State pulls it off

This result would have been unthinkable this offseason, but Mississippi State has gone on the road to College Station and knocked off No. 15 Texas A&M. That's their third road victory vs. a ranked team in a season and a half under Leach. Will Rogers goes 46-of-59 for 408 yards and three TDs. Bama is up next for both of these teams (Bulldogs have a bye next week). So who is the worst team in the SEC West? Might it be Texas A&M? The Aggies are lost offensively without Haynes King at QB. Here's the play that pretty much sealed it.

Close games alert

Got a couple close ones in the works here as Mississippi State is clinging to a 24-22 lead late against the Aggies on the road. Oklahoma State is trying to put away Baylor in the final minutes as well. Cowboys lead it 17-14. Been another great week of drama, and the night is still young.

Penix to the locker room

Michael Penix has gone to the locker room for Indiana with an apparent injury in the third quarter. The Hoosiers are trailing 14-0 at No. 4 Penn State and could probably use a fresh arm at QB for a bit anyway. But you hope Penix is OK. He's been through a lot in his career and also had some really high highs. For whatever reason, it just hasn't been there so far this season.

Kentucky drops hilarious edit after Florida win

After Kentucky snapped Florida's 16-game winning streak in Lexington, the Wildcats social team had some fun. Earlier this week, there was a video floating around social media of a man capturing an alligator in a recycling bin. UK edited the video with a Kentucky logo capturing the Gators – get it? When you beat a rival for the first time in decades at home – and pick up the first winning streak since 1977 – you get to enjoy the spoils.

NC State survives

Wow, it wasn't pretty but No. 23 NC State survives for a 34-27 win over Louisiana Tech as Austin Kendall's last-ditch heave to the end zone is intercepted as time expires. What a ridiculous start to the season for Louisiana Tech. Blew a three-score lead and lost 35-34 at Mississippi State, outlasted Southeastern Louisiana 45-42, lost 39-37 on a Hail Mary vs. SMU, squeaked out a 24-17 W vs. North Texas last week. Now goes down to the final play at No. 23 NC State and loses. Total chaos team.

Boston College surging vs. Clemson

3Q: Boston College 13, No. 25 Clemson 13

Undefeated Boston College is giving 2-2 Clemson everything it can handle. The Eagles took their first drive of the third quarter down the field 75 yards in four plays for a three-yard touchdown run. Backup QB Dennis Grosel has thrown for 158 yards shortly after halftime and is averaging 8.3 yards per pass. Needless to say, Clemson's offense has not fixed its ills.

Kentucky does it

Kentucky snaps a 15-game losing streak against top-10 foes and snaps a 16-game home losing streak to Florida with a 20-13 victory over the No. 10 Gators. Don't look now, but the Wildcats -- unranked mind you -- are now 5-0. Fans are rushing Kroger Field, and you can't blame them. Their team just beat a top-10 team while amassing just 211 yards. That's as Kentucky as it gets. This blocked FG returned for a score will go down in Kentucky football lore.

Aggies on upset alert

3Q: Mississippi State 24, No. 15 Texas A&M 13

Mississippi State has Texas A&M on the ropes behind a tremendous performance from Bulldogs QB Will Rogers. Rogers has thrown for 337 yards and three touchdowns with time left in the third quarter, including 126 yards and two scores from Makai Polk. Texas A&M QB Zach Calzada is playing better, completing two-thirds of his passes, but the Aggies sit at just 233 total yards. Texas A&M has not lost to an unranked opponent since a 28-24 loss to Auburn on Nov. 3, 2018.

Upset watch

Louisiana Tech has the football and is driving on No. 23 NC State while trailing 34-27 with under two minutes to go. Bulldogs were 19.5 point underdogs. Former Oklahoma and West Virginia quarterback Austin Kendall trying to lead La. Tech to a marquee victory on the road vs. an ACC foe.

Penn State cruising

Penn State's defense is stingy tonight, and Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. continues to struggle. With the Hoosiers driving, he just put way too much air under one, and it was intercepted by Joey Porter Jr. Penix is just 7-of-18 tonight. Sean Clifford has been far from perfect, but the Nittany Lions are up 14-0 late in 2Q. Penn State can't get lax here and start looking ahead to Iowa, but it feels like Indiana is going to need to find a gear that's just been missing in order to get back in this game.

Oklahoma State shutting Baylor down

Baylor's been a surprise team so far this season with Gerry Bohannon taking over for Charlie Brewer at QB and doing some nice things. But the run game has been non-existent for the Bears at OK State tonight, and the Cowboys lead 14-0 as it gets late in the third quarter. Oklahoma State isn't pretty -- Spencer Sanders has thrown three INTs tonight -- but it just keeps taking care of business.

Checking in on Clemson

Don't call it an offensive explosion, but the No. 25 Tigers have put a touchdown and two field goals on the board through five possessions. Clemson leads BC 13-3 in the second quarter as its defense continues to shine. Kobe Pace and Phil Mafah are toting the rock for Dabo's club tonight with Will Shipley injured and Lyn-J Dixon in the transfer portal.

Aggies on upset alert as well

Half: Mississippi State 17, No. 15 Texas A&M 13

The Aggies came into their home matchup with Mississippi State as seven-point favorites, but have been unable to get the offense going against a Bulldogs defense that has limited big plays through two frames. Bulldogs quarterback Will Rogers has been money, going 23 of 27 for 233 yards and two touchdowns. A loss for Texas A&M would be devastating for their SEC West title hopes considering it would be their second conference loss and Alabama will roll into town next weekend.

Florida on upset alert

Start of Q4: Kentucky 13, No. 10 Florida 10

Kentucky blocked a Florida field goal and returned it for a touchdown midway through the third quarter to regain the lead on a Florida team that has been wildly undisciplined with 11 penalties through three quarters. The Gators haven't lost in Lexington since 1986, and Dan Mullen would be the first Florida coach to have two losses against the Wildcats since Doug Dickey in 1977-78. The Gators held Kentucky on fourth down on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving them at least a little momentum going into the final frame.

Penn State makes a stand

An interception by Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford set Indiana up in great field position, but the Hoosiers wasted it with a turnover on downs. As the first quarter nears an end, the No. 4 Nittany Lions lead 7-0. Would be a big win for this program considering the crushing nature of last season's loss to Indiana. Would also set up a top-5 showdown between PSU and Iowa next week. Long way to go, though.

Wild play for Wildcats

Florida forced a Kentucky interception and looked poised to surge ahead 17-7 in the third quarter, but then UK forced the Gators into a field goal try. It was blocked by Josh Paschal, then caught and returned 76 yards for a TD by Trevin Wallace. What a play. What a momentum swing. The PAT misses, but UK leads No. 10 Florida 13-10 with 6:36 left in the third.

Michigan State dominating early

No. 17 Michigan State is out to a 14-0 lead on Western Kentucky midway through the first quarter as the Spartans seek to reach 5-0. They are one of this season's early surprises and are looking really strong against a tricky aerial attack from the Hilltoppers. WKU gave Indiana a scare last week, but the Hilltoppers have gone three-and-out on their first two possessions tonight.

Down goes Oregon

The No. 3 Ducks fall 31-24 to Stanford in OT. Wow. Oregon led 24-17 late and had a chance to put it away. Couldn't do it. What a terrible loss for a team that had its path to the CFP pretty well paved. Fans won't love Anthony Brown's 14-of-26 for 186 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT performance. But you've also gotta look at 10 penalties for 99 yards and an inability to get late stops. College football craziness continues.

OU snaps K-State streak

FINAL: No. 6 Oklahoma 37, Kansas State 31

The Wildcats made things spicy down the stretch but Oklahoma managed to pull away to beat Kansas State for the first time since 2018. Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler completed 22 of 25 passes for 243 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Running back Kennedy Brooks rushed for 92 yards and a score. Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson had a tremendous game with 320 yards passing and three scores. The win gives OU a 12-game winning streak, the longest since 2017.
