Colorado vs. Oregon score, takeaways: No. 10 Ducks eviscerate Deion Sanders-led Buffs in dominant showing

No. 10 Oregon obliterated No. 19 Colorado, 42-6, at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, putting forward one of the most dominant high-level performances we've seen a third of the way through the 2023 college football season. The Ducks held the Buffaloes' previously productive offense to just 194 total yards as Oregon moved to 4-0 and ended Colorado's undefeated season.

Oregon got off to a brutally fast start against the Buffaloes, scoring on their first three possessions. Colorado had no answer as the hosts averaged 7.2 yards per play, including an absurd 6.3 yards per carry against an overmatched Buffs defense.

Colorado struggled massively against Oregon's front seven as quarterback Shedeur Sanders stood under constant duress. Sanders was sacked seven times as the Buffs were held to 40 yards rushing and spent most of the first three quarters in the negatives before the Ducks took their collective foot off the gas.

Troy Franklin caught eight passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns to pace Oregon in a dominant performance by QB Bo Nix, who completed 28 of 33 passes for 276 yards with three touchdowns, an interception and bonus rushing score. Oregon didn't give the ball to any running back more than 10 times, but Bucky Irving led the way with 89 yards rushing.

Sanders completed 23 of 33 passes for 159 yards for his first game under 348 yards and two touchdowns at Colorado. The Buffs were held scoreless for the first 57 minutes of the game, only posting on a garbage-time touchdown to end the fourth quarter as Sanders found tight end Mikey Harrison for a 6-yard score. Even the extra-point attempt was blocked to add a final insult to injury.

Ducks made a statement

Oregon flew under the radar through three games after a tough contest against Texas Tech and big performances against overmatched opponents. However, Ducks coach Dan Lanning clearly wanted to send a message in the Buffs' first game against a top 10 opponent.

During his pregame speech, Lanning took direct aim at the hype and glitz that has defined Colorado football through its magical start to the season. "They're fighting for clicks, we're fighting for wins," Lanning said. "There's a difference, right? This game ain't going to be played in Hollywood. It's going to be played on the grass."

Oregon took that message right to Colorado, physically punishing the Buffs on both sides of the ball. CU showed some shortcomings defending the run through its first three games, and Oregon spammed it to the tune of 240 yards on the ground. For comparison, the Ducks ran for just 195 yards in a 49-10 over the Buffs last season.

While Colorado remains one of the most difficult teams to rank, Oregon cemented itself as a national contender by handing the most hyped team in college football a showcase loss.

Cinderella ride ends

Multiple broadcasts of Colorado games have joked that the Buffs' rise to prominence under coach Deion Sanders was so unbelievable, it felt scripted. Picking up a win over national finalist TCU, dominating historic rival Nebraska at home and coming back in double overtime against hated rival Colorado State got the sports world buzzing.

Unfortunately, reality set in during the first game against a legitimate Pac-12 contender. The Buffaloes are nowhere close to conference contention and have many of the fatal flaws that analysts feared while projecting their season. Notably, Colorado is unable to hang in the trenches, and even offensive coordinator Sean Lewis was not capable of scheming around all the issues.

Sanders took issue with the characterization that Colorado needed a game like this to be "humbled" before entering Pac-12 play.

"It's not something we needed," Sanders said, per Yahoo Sports. "That's like saying we needed a car wreck. It's like saying you needed that. That's stupid."

Colorado still has a solid path to a bowl game with Arizona State, Stanford and Arizona still on the schedule. The other five games all come against ranked opponents, starting with No. 5 USC next week. Ranked opponents provide opportunities, but the Buffaloes are settling into the middle of the Pac-12 race.

Nix keeps Heisman Trophy pace

Nix entered the day as one of the early Heisman frontrunners and kept things rolling with a hot game against Colorado. The Oregon star completed his first 11 passes and 85% of his throws on the day to lead the offense on six touchdown drives. All four of his touchdowns came in the first half before Lanning pulled him from the game.

The Ducks moved the ball at will, but Nix's consistency stood apart against a talented Colorado secondary. He completed 25 of his first 29 passes and only one longer than 30 yards -- a 36-yard touchdown pass to Troy Franklin. Instead of relying on explosive plays, Nix has been reliable down-to-down, an important benchmark as he projects to the next level.

Oregon sits at 4-0 and has Nix on pace for Heisman contention. On a day where its offense shut down Shedeur Sanders, Nix stood apart as the best signal-caller on the field.

Shutting down Shedeur's hype?

Through three games, Sanders ranked top 10 nationally with 1,251 yards passing and 10 touchdowns. Oregon used a variety of pressures and coverages to confuse the Colorado offensive line and force Sanders into limited decisions.

Sanders was sacked seven times and pressured on numerous others as he tried to create any semblence of offense. He was officially credited with -34 yards rushing because of all the sacks. Through the air, Sanders did not complete a pass of more than 21 yards and finished with 159 yards passing on 4.8 yards per attempt.

Granted, Oregon is one of the most athletic defensive teams that Colorado will play this season. Still, the Ducks showed a playbook of creating pressure against Sanders and putting some dents into what has to this point been one of the nation's most explosive offenses. With an aggressive USC team on the horizon, expect more of the same.

Oregon completes dominant win

FINAL: No. 10 Oregon 42, No. 19 Colorado 6

That's all she wrote, and not much more needs to be said. Oregon was the better team from start to end as the Ducks bullied the Buffaloes, going up 42-0 before Colorado finally got on the board. Oregon continues to look like a team worth watching in the College Football Playoff race, while the honeymoon phase is officially over for Deion Sanders at Colorado. In the end, the Ducks out-gained the Buffaloes 522-199 in total yards of offense, and much of that yardage for Colorado didn't come until after the game was out of hand. Both teams are going to have their hands full going forward in navigating a Pac-12 that appears as deep as it has been in some time. Oregon looks like it has the offensive firepower to get through that slate, while the Buffaloes -- even much improved from last year -- had it made clear on Saturday that they still have a long ways to go before they can be seen as true contenders.

Colorado avoids the shutout

Late 4Q: No. 10 Oregon 42, No. 19 Colorado 6

There will be no shutout as Colorado finally gets on the board with a short touchdown pass from Shedeur Sanders to Michael Harrison before the extra point fails. It's a moot point with 2:51 left in the game, but Deion Sanders and company avoid the extra humiliation that would have come from getting blanked at Autzen Stadium. The Buffs went 93 yards on the touchdown drive after entering with just 101 yards all game, more than doubling the yardage of any previous Colorado drive Saturday.

Day over for Bo Nix

Ty Thompson has come in for Bo Nix at quarterback for Oregon, and that's move that nobody will question given the score of this one in the fourth quarter. Nix ended the day completing 28 of 33 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns with an interception, rushing for an additional nine yards and a touchdown. Talk of Nix as an early-season Heisman candidate is sure to continue after that showing, in which he and the Ducks offense completely carved up the Colorado defense.

Different area codes

END 3Q: No. 10 Oregon 42, No. 19 Colorado 0

Only twice today has an Oregon drive failed to result in a touchdown, including the most recent as the Ducks went for it on 4th down in the red zone but came up short. Nonetheless, Oregon still finished the third quarter out-gaining Colorado by more than 400 yards of total offense. It's been that kind of afternoon; one where the Ducks have been able to do just about anything they wish, and thus now have some room to step off the gas if desired. The Buffaloes, with the ball currently in their hands, look as productive as they have all day on this drive, though it's far too little to late at this rate for Deion Sanders and company.

More of the same

Halfway through the third quarter, Colorado has found nothing. The Buffaloes are still at just 34 yards, far behind Oregon's total of 42 points. Oregon hasn't done anything special, the Ducks have just barreled through Colorado to the tune of 6.6 yards per carry. Three different running backs have rushed for at least 45 yards, and none have more than eight carries. Even sack-adjusted, Colorado has mustered just 22 total yards rushing. The rushing gap has been devastating.

Another Ducks touchdown

MID 3Q: No. 10 Oregon 42, Colorado 0

What more can you say at this rate? Oregon finds the end zone again as Jordan James rushes up the middle after the Ducks go for it on 4th & 1 at the Buffaloes 1-yard line. That's seven total drives today for Oregon and six touchdowns to show. Regardless of Colorado's holes that have been exposed today, get ready for the Ducks, with this offense, to be a problem for the rest of the Pac-12 in their final season of membership.

Oregon threatening again

It's quite likely the Ducks will be adding more points again here shortly -- they're already deep into Colorado territory -- after the offense saw five of its six first-half drives lead to touchdowns. The Buffs just have zero answers for an Oregon offense that has now eclipsed 400 total yards and looks far from finished. When the dust settles today, many folks may be rethinking expectations about both of these teams if the score stays as lopsided as it is. It's shaping up to be a roaring start to Pac-12 play for the Ducks, and not so much for Colorado.

Ducks soaring past the Buffaloes

Halftime: No. 10 Oregon 35, No. 19 Colorado 0

It's been a bloodbath in every sense of the word through 30 minutes of action in Eugene, Oregon. The Ducks added another touchdown in the final minute of the half via a keeper from Bo Nix to make it a 35-0 contest, and given how lifeless the Colorado offense has looked, it's unlikely that the Buffaloes will be working their way back from this monumental deficit. If things stay at the current pace, Oregon could ascend even higher in the AP rankings, while Colorado is at risk of dropping out. It doesn't sound like Ducks coach Dan Lanning will be turning the back the dial in the second half either, stating during his halftime interview "We're not done yet. We're not satisfied. I hope everyone that's been watching (Colorado) every week is still watching."

It's as dominant as it looks

Here's a simplistic first-half stats comparison between Oregon and Colorado.

  • Points: 35 | 0
  • Yards: 378 | 21
  • Rush: 171 | -35
  • 1st Ds: 22 | 4
  • Plays: 47 | 24
  • TOP: 20:48 | 9:12

Dan Lanning doesn't hold back pregame

Much was made about Lanning's mid-summer comments suggesting Colorado hadn't contributed much to the Pac-12 following the news of the Buffaloes' return to the Big 12, but the more legitimate jab at coach Deion Sanders came moments before kickoff Saturday. Just watch this video and it's clear that Lanning doesn't exactly seem to care for the glitz and glamor that has surrounded Colorado since Sanders arrived. So far, Oregon has backed all of that up with the play on the field ...  as I type this, they just scored again to make it 28-0.

Finally, a play

Colorado made its first disruptive play of the game as defensive back Jahquez Robinson jumped and pulled a massive interception off Oregon quarterback Bo Nix. The pick gives Colorado the ball with favorable field position and a chance to build some momentum.

Zero answers

Colorado's first 20 minutes have been a disaster in every way imaginable. The Ducks are outgaining them 225-21. The score is 21-0. The Buffs have -7 yards rushing. Colorado is averaging 1.1 yards per play. What else is there even to say at this point?

Ducks pouring it on

MID 2Q: No. 10 Oregon 21, No. 19 Colorado 0

The rout is officially on ... or so it sure appears that way. Three drives, three touchdowns for the Oregon offense as Bo Nix throws his second touchdown pass of the day. And this time, the two-point conversion attempt is successful. Already, the Ducks have out-gained Colorado 225-21 in total yards of offense, and there's plenty of room for more damage. Nix only has one incompletion, now 16-of-17 passing for 126 yards. As for Oregon's rushing attack, the Ducks have put up 99 yards as a team, led by Bucky Irving's 56.

Oregon pulls off fake punt

It looks like coach Dan Lanning and the Ducks -- even up two scores -- aren't afraid to pull any tricks out of the bag against the Buffs. Oregon runs the fake punt from deep in its own territory and it's executed to perfection as the Ducks pick up the first down and the drive continues. It remains all Oregon into the opening minutes of the second quarter as the Ducks now have a chance to make this a three-score edge. Behold...

Oregon up two scores already

LATE 1Q: No. 10 Oregon 13, No. 19 Colorado 0

Two drives, two touchdowns for the Oregon offense and it's already a 13-0 lead for the Ducks in this AP Top 25 showdown. This time it's a 12-play, 53-yard scoring drive that ends with Nix hitting Casey Kelly for the one-yard touchdown pass. Oregon somewhat oddly opted to go for a two-point conversion, but to no avail. The Ducks have already gained 137 total yards of offense as opposed to a negative yard for Colorado, and Nix remains a perfect 11-for-11 in passing. If Oregon keeps it up and the Buffs -- who have struggled to tackle early -- don't answer this time around, there's a strong chance this game could get out of hand in a hurry.

'Our pets' mascots' heads are falling off!'

The Oregon Duck is not above throwing shade and creating highlights of his own, but his attempt Saturday ahead of the Colorado game at Autzen Stadium did not go exactly as planned. Wearing a white cowboy hat and holding a sledgehammer seeking to destroy a "Prime Time" clock as a way of roughing up visiting coach Deion Sanders, the Oregon Duck started well enough ... only for his head to fall off sending the mascot running back into the tunnel.

The trash talk miscue does not appear to have led to any bad omens for Oregon, though. The Ducks lead the Buffaloes 13-0 after the hosts' first two offensive drives of the game.

Quick on, quick off

Colorado's aggressive offense moves fast. Unfortunately, that can be a double-edged sword when going against a talented opponent. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders threw the ball three times, but lost yardage as the Buffaloes had to punt after just 72 seconds. The Colorado defense had to defend a 10-play, 4:45 drive in the opening minutes and now is quickly back on the field. The competitive depth will be tested in a major way.

Oregon strikes in a hurry

EARLY 1Q: No. 10 Oregon 7, No. 19 Colorado 0

Just like that, the Ducks are flying. Oregon opens the game with a 72-yard touchdown drive to strike first again the Buffaloes, and generally speaking, it looked easy. Quarterback Bo Nix completed all six of his pass attempts that series before Noah Whittington found himself barreling his way into the end zone to give the Ducks the early edge. Get ready for a lot of points scored by Oregon today if the Ducks offense is consistently able to give Colorado's defense fits as it did just now.

Buffs tested early

Colorado has survived some dynamic offensive players, but Oregon is a different challenge. The Ducks easily pushed down the field like a knife through butter, hitting six straight positive plays and averaging 8.2 yards per play against Colorado's defense. I referred to the rushing disparity as one of the keys to watch in this game, and Oregon averaged 5.8 yards per carry. Defensive coordinator Charles Kelley will have to find ways to generate negative plays or Colorado will get blown off the field defensively.

Oregon mascot has fun with 'Coach Prime'

Since arriving as Colorado coach, there's been plenty of talk -- and even some criticism -- over Deion Sanders' signature look of wearing a hat and glasses while coaching. It appears the Oregon mascot had some fun with that during the Ducks' entrance at Autzen Stadium on Saturday, mimicking Sanders' style. We'll see if anybody takes that "personally" in a game that has all eyes on in it in the Pacific Northwest.

Ducks make it personal?

Two weeks ago, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders said that Nebraska insulted the Buffs by walking on their field during the pregame. This time, it was the Buffaloes walking and stomping on Oregon's logo during their road trip to Autzen Stadium. Colorado has been notably quiet towards Oregon during the lead-up until game week, but could the actions send a message?

Saban: 'Tremendous' respect for Coach Prime

Deion Sanders shared his affinity for Nick Saban during a "60 Minutes" interview last Sunday, and the Alabama coach reciprocated the sentiment when asked about Coach Prime and Colorado's 3-0 start to the season this week.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Deion Sanders," Saban said. "First, he's a great person and he's done a great job of marketing the program to create a lot of national interest. I see their team playing well on the field. They play with discipline, they do a good job of executing, they've been able to score points, playing decent on defense. All of those things, to me, are indicators he's a really good coach."

Saban continued: "I've always thought that, and he's always been successful, whether it was Jackson State, high school or now at Colorado. His teams have always been well-coached."

Transfer QBs making waves in Pac-12

By fortune, happenstance or coaching skill, the Pac-12 has cornered the market on transfer quarterbacks. The season opened with nine of the conference's 12 starting quarterbacks not having initially been signed by their respective schools. That 75% mark leads the Power Five. Depending on depth chart moves, 11 of this Saturday's 12 starters could be transfers.

Six games between ranked teams highlight the national schedule in Week 4. For the first time in its history, the Pac-12 will be involved in three of them. Saturday's tilt between No. 19 Colorado and No. 10 Oregon features two of those star transfer quarterbacks.

  • Colorado's Shedeur Sanders (Jackson State) is second nationally only to Washington's Michael Penix Jr. in yards passing per game.
  • Oregon's Bo Nix (Auburn) leads all active FBS quarterbacks with 50 career starts.

Oregon -21 | Odds via SportsLine consensus

Oregon presents Colorado its biggest challenge by far, but the Buffaloes are comfortable getting into a shootout with their high-powered offense. Shedeur Sanders has thrown for more than 1,200 yards in just three games and will get his against Oregon. The Ducks come away victorious, but it will come down to the fourth quarter. Pick: Colorado +21

The Rock got Colorado hype

It's been a week since Colorado's rousing double-overtime win over Colorado State, and we saw plenty of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson across TV and in the Buffaloes' locker room. What we did not see was what The Rock actually said to the players before the game. That changed Saturday as Johnson released his own video of his rousing pregame speech. Take a look.
