Shipley signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Jan. 14, Baseball America reports. Shipley has been in the Mariners organization the last two seasons but didn't make an appearance in 2023, most recently posting a 3.79 ERA and 58:36 K:BB over 54.2 relief innings at Double-A Arkansas in 2022. Slated to turn 32 later this month, Shipley hasn't reached the big leagues since 2018.... See More ... See Less

Mariners' Braden Shipley: Back with Seattle
Shipley re-signed April 6 with the Mariners on a minor-league contract. Shipley has yet to report to an affiliate, as he's likely building up at the Mariners' facility in Arizona after he had remained unsigned throughout spring training. Once he's deemed ready for game action, Shipley could settle at Double-A Arkansas, where he spent his entire first season in the Seattle organization and pitched to a 3.79 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 54.2 innings. The 31-year-old right-hander has previously seen action in the majors in parts of three seasons, though he hasn't made an appearance at baseball's top level since 2018.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Braden Shipley: Dispatched to minor-league camp
The Reds reassigned Shipley to their minor-league camp Monday. Shipley, a 2013 first-round pick of the Diamondbacks, hasn't appeared in the majors since 2018. He'll likely report to Triple-A Louisville when the minor-league season begins in May.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Braden Shipley: Invited to spring training
Shipley signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Wednesday as a non-roster invitee. Shipley will get the chance to compete for a major-league roster spot during spring training after being let go by the Royals at the beginning of September. The right-handed swingman hasn't appeared in the big leagues in either of the past two seasons but posted a 5.95 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 95.1 innings with Triple-A Reno in 2019.... See More ... Braden Shipley: Cut loose by KC
The Royals released Shipley on Monday. Shipley's release will open up a spot in the Royals' 60-man roster pool. The right-hander had been working out at the Royals' alternate training site since the conclusion of summer camp.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Braden Shipley: Added to 60-man pool
Shipley will be a part of the Royals' 60-man player pool this season, Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports. Shipley was in camp on a minor-league deal prior to the shutdown. He was once a top prospect in the Diamondbacks' system, but he has been languishing with earned run averages north of 5.00 at Triple-A over the last few seasons.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Braden Shipley: Gets minor-league deal with Royals
Shipley agreed to a minor-league contract with the Royals on Tuesday. Shipley has thrown 100 innings in the majors, all for the Diamondbacks. The 2013 first-round pick hasn't shown much in those innings, posting a 5.49 ERA and a 14.3 percent strikeout rate. He spent all of 2019 with Triple-A Reno, struggling to a 5.95 ERA in 95.1 innings of work. He'll make $600,000 if he makes the big-league roster, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.... See More ... Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Sent outright to Triple-A
Shipley was outrighted to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. The 26-year-old, formerly a top pitching prospect, has fallen off the map due to poor command and control (4.1 career BB/9) and an inability to keep the ball in the yard (1.7 career HR/9). Shipley's pitch repertoire is decent, but the Diamondbacks ultimately decided he wasn't worth keeping on the 40-man roster over other prospects in the organization. He figures to act as an organizational depth piece in 2019.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Sent back to Triple-A
Shipley was optioned to Triple-A Reno prior to the Diamondbacks' 5-3 win over the Marlins on Tuesday. Shipley's latest stint in the majors lasted just two games, with the right-hander receiving the demotion after giving up four runs on four hits and two walks over two innings Monday in Arizona's loss in the series opener. The Diamondbacks had been developing Shipley as a starter since selecting him in the first round of the 2013 first-year player draft, but after finding limited success in that capacity in recent seasons, it appears he has transitioned to a full-time bullpen role.... Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Called up to majors
Shipley was called up to the majors Sunday. Shipley tossed three scoreless innings for Arizona earlier in the month. He's up to replace Jake Barrett, who was optioned to Triple-A Reno.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Optioned to minors
Shipley was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the club reinstated Jeff Mathis from the paternity list. Shipley appeared in two games over the past couple days, tossing a pair of scoreless outings against Pittsburgh while striking out one across three combined innings of relief. Look for Shipley to rejoin the bullpen later on this year.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Joins big club
Shipley was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday. Shipley compiled a 6.48 ERA across 41.2 innings (split between starting and relieving) with Triple-A Reno prior to earning a promotion to the majors. The 26-year-old was recently shifted to a relief role and figures to work in low-leverage situations out of the bullpen during his time with the Diamondbacks. Christian Walker was sent to the minors in a corresponding roster move.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Working out of bullpen at Triple-A
Shipley has made all five of his appearances with Triple-A Reno out of the bullpen since being activated from the 10-day disabled list and optioned to the minors May 18. Per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, the success Matt Koch and Clay Buchholz have enjoyed at the back end of the rotation in recent weeks coupled with the impending returns of Shelby Miller (elbow) and Robbie Ray (oblique) from the DL convinced the Diamondbacks they had sufficient organizational starting pitching depth. With that in mind, Shipley has been transitioned to a relief role, which Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen believes will increase the right-hander's chances of making an impact with the big club later this season. Before he gets another call to the majors, however, Shipley will probably have to deliver far better results out of the bullpen. In those five relief outings with Reno, Shipley has given up eight runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and five walks over eight frames.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Returns from DL, option to Triple-A
Shipley (elbow) was reinstated from he 10-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Reno on Friday. Shipley was expected to pitch in an extended spring training game Friday following his successful bullpen session Tuesday, but the Diamondbacks opted to send him straight the the minors instead. Arizona's plans in the starting rotation remain unclear with Robbie Ray (oblique) still on the disabled list, so it could turn out to be a short stay at Reno for Shipley.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: To throw bullpen session Tuesday
Shipley (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports. Shipley has been out since May 8 with elbow inflammation, so that bullpen session will come exactly a week after he hit the disabled list. The 26-year-old hasn't pitched in the big leagues yet this season and owns an ugly 6.40 ERA through six starts for Triple-A Reno.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Scheduled to throw Friday
Shipley (elbow) is expected to start a throwing program Friday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Shipley was placed on the disabled list Tuesday due to right elbow inflammation, so it's encouraging that he's already going to get back to throwing. It's unclear how long he'll be out, but he's eligible to return May 15.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Called up to majors
Shipley was called up to the big leagues Saturday. The Diamondbacks have three starters on the disabled list, so they'll turn to Shipley for at least one start. The 26-year-old has a 5.40 ERA in 95 career big-league innings, and his underlying numbers back up his ERA, with a 14.3 percent strikeout rate and a 10.1 percent walk rate. He hasn't looked any better through six starts for Triple-A Reno this season, as his ERA there sits at 6.40.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Could replace Walker in rotation
Shipley was one of four Triple-A Reno pitchers that Diamondbacks assistant general manager Jared Porter mentioned as potential replacements in the rotation for Taijuan Walker (forearm), who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports. Walker will undergo an MRI on Monday as the Diamondbacks look to determine the severity of his forearm tightness in addition to a potential return timetable, but the right-hander's placement on the DL means that he'll miss at least one turn through the rotation Friday or Saturday against San Diego. In addition to Shipley, Porter said that Matt Koch, Albert Suarez and Kris Medlen -- all of whom are members of the Reno rotation -- could fill Walker's place, though the latter two seem to be less likely candidates due to their lack of 40-man roster spots. Shipley has been an early standout for Reno (1.59 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 17.1 innings), but it would be difficult to roster him with much confidence even in NL-only formats if he gets the call to the Arizona rotation over Koch, Suarez and Medlen. The 26-year-old owns a 5.40 ERA (5.89 FIP), 1.62 WHIP and 5.7 K/9 across 95 career innings in the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Optioned to Reno
Shipley was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Shipley was jousting for a back-end bullpen role this spring but, despite posting a solid 3.38 ERA and 0.94 WHIP over 5.1 innings of spring ball, will have to begin his 2018 campaign in Reno. The 26-year-old could make his way back to the big leagues during the regular season as an emergency spot starter or an additional bullpen arm. He posted a 5.76 ERA over 25 innings (including three starts) with the Diamondbacks last season.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Gives up homer in loss
Shipley gave up two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out a batter over two innings Thursday during the Diamondbacks' 11-6 win over the Brewers in Cactus League play. Two of the hits Shipley allowed went for extra bases and included a home run by Milwaukee catcher Manny Pina. Considering that the right-hander yielded 23 home runs across 130 innings between Triple-A Reno and the Diamondbacks a season ago, he'll likely need to show improvement in curbing the long balls in his subsequent spring outings to have a serious case for claiming an Opening Day bullpen role with the big club....
