Niku had two assists, one shot on goal, one hit and one blocked shot over 15:32 of ice time in Saturday's 6-1 win over Detroit.

The Canadiens erupted Saturday after scoring just four goals in their first five games. And much of the explosion came from newcomers like Niku, who was in the lineup for the first time this season and played 2:40 on the power play. He first set up fellow newbie Mike Hoffman for a man-advantage goal -- the game-winner -- then had the secondary assist on Christian Dvorak's goal in the second period. The effort earned Niku the game's second star. The 25-year-old defenseman doesn't have a long track record in the NHL, having played a total of 54 games for Winnipeg the previous four seasons.
