Hjalmarsson has signed a contract with HV 71 of the Swedish Hockey League, according to TSN's Chris Johnston. He sat out last season, but at the age of 35, the defenseman wanted to finish out his career in his native Sweden.... See More ... See Less

Niklas Hjalmarsson: Set to retire
Hjalmarsson is expected to retire from the NHL after 14 seasons, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports. The 34-year-old blueliner appeared in 41 games with Arizona last season, tallying five assists and a minus-6 rating while averaging 17:22 of ice time. Hjalmarsson spent 10 seasons with the Blackhawks and was a key defenseman on three championship teams during his time there. He finishes his NHL career with 25 goals, 172 points and 1,605 blocked shots while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time across 821 games. The 6-foot-3 Swede also tallied 29 points in 137 career postseason appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Delivers assist
Hjalmarsson produced an assist, two shots on goal and two blocked shots in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Sharks. HJalmarsson set up Johan Larsson for a goal in the second period. The 33-year-old Hjalmarsson is up to five assists through 37 games this year. A stay-at-home defenseman, he's added 64 blocked shots, 18 PIM and a minus-4 rating in a bottom-four role for the Coyotes in 2020-21.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Quiet in return
Hjalmarsson (upper body) recorded two shots on net and two blocked shots in 16:14 of ice time in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Avalanche. Hjalmarsson missed 10 games with the injury. The 33-year-old defenseman will likely remain more of a defensive presence than a scoring threat. He has four helpers, 46 blocks, 21 shots on net and a minus-4 rating in 30 appearances this season.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Returning Monday
Hjalmarsson (upper body) was activated from injured reserve and will suit up for Monday's game against Colorado, Alexander Kinkopf of the Coyotes' official website reports. Hjalmarsson will return from a 10-game absence Monday. The 33-year-old defenseman has four assists and 44 blocked shots through 29 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Could return Monday
Head coach Rick Tocchet said Sunday that Hjalmarsson (upper body) "could be ready" for Monday's game versus the Avalanche, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports. If Hjalmarsson isn't ready for Monday's game, the Wednesday matchup against the Wild is also a strong possibility. However, the 33-year-old will miss a 10th straight game Sunday when the Coyotes take on the Golden Knights. Prior to this injury, Hjalmarsson produced four assists and 44 blocked shots through 29 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Not on trip
Hjalmarsson (upper body) isn't traveling with the Coyotes for the beginning of the team's nine-game road trip, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports. Hjalmarsson evidently suffered a "bit of a setback" with his injury earlier this week. The Coyotes have yet to release an expected timetable for the blueliner's recovery, but the fact that he isn't traveling with the team doesn't bode well for his near-term availability. Hjalmarsson will need to be activated off injured reserve before rejoining the lineup.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Lands on IR
Hjalmarsson (upper body) was placed injured reserve Tuesday, per CapFriendly. Hjalmarsson had already been ruled out for Tuesday's game versus the Avalanche, and now he'll miss this weekend's series against the Sharks on Friday and Saturday. Jason Demers figures to stay in the lineup until Hjalmarsson returns.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Sitting out Tuesday
Hjalmarsson (upper body) won't play in Tuesday's game versus the Avalanche, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports. Hjalmarsson exited Monday's loss to the Avalanche with an upper-body injury. He'll miss his fourth game of the season Tuesday. There's no clear timetable for his return, but his absence doesn't affect fantasy much, as he's recorded just four points through 29 games. Jason Demers will enter the lineup in his place.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Suffers injury Monday
Hjalmarsson left Monday's game against Colorado with an upper-body injury and will not return. Hjalmarsson saw just 12:33 of ice time before leaving Monday's contest. The veteran defenseman missed a game earlier this month with an upper-body injury and it's unclear if Monday's incident is related to that. He'll be questionable for Tuesday's rematch with the Avalanche.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Ready to return
Halmarsson (upper body) will return to the lineup for Tuesday's game against Minnesota, Jessi Pierce of The Athletic reports. Hjalmarsson missed Sunday's matchup with the Wild with an upper-body issue, but he'll return to a bottom-pairing role for Tuesday's rematch. He's picked up four helpers through 25 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Out for Sunday's game
Hjalmarsson (upper body) won't play in Sunday's game versus the Wild. Hjalmarsson is considered day-to-day, so he could be back in action as soon as Tuesday's rematch against the Wild. Ilya Lyubushkin is expected to take Hjalmarsson's place in the lineup for now.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: First multi-point game in two years
Hjalmarsson registered a pair of assists in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Wild. Hjalmarsson recorded a two-assist outing for the first time since Feb. 12, 2019. The Swedish blueliner has been unusually engaged on offense with four helpers in his last four games. That accounts for all of his offense in 22 appearances, and he's added 30 blocked shots and 16 shots on net with an even plus-minus rating.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Nabs assist Friday
Hjalmarsson produced an assist in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Wild. Hjalmarsson picked up the second helper on Clayton Keller's lone tally for the Coyotes in the third period. The 33-year-old Hjalmarsson has two assists, 30 blocked shots, 12 PIM and a minus-2 rating in 21 games. He's strictly a defensive presence and doesn't need to be monitored in fantasy.... See More ... Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Collects helper in loss
Hjalmarsson notched an assist, three blocked shots and two shots on goal in Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Avalanche. Hjalmarsson set up Clayton Keller for a goal in the second period. The helper is Hjalmarsson's first point of the season. The Swedish blueliner has added 27 blocks, 16 shots on net, 12 PIM and a minus-1 rating in 19 contests. With a near-total lack of offense, HJalmarsson isn't doing enough to be rostered in fantasy.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Sheltered in return
Hjalmarsson (upper body) posted two shots on goal and two PIM in 14:44 during Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Kings. Hjalmarsson missed two games with the injury, and he returned to a reduced role on the third pairing. With the Coyotes' defense finally at full health, Hjalmarsson, Jason Demers, Jordan Oesterle and Ilya Lyubushkin will probably be in competition for three spots in the lineup. A steady defender, Hjalmarsson has no points, 20 blocked shots and eight PIM through 14 appearances, so there's not much here from a fantasy standpoint.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Ready to rock
Hjalmarsson (upper body) will be in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Kings, Alexander Kinkopf of the Coyotes' official website reports. The 33-year-old will return to the lineup Thursday after missing the past two games with the upper-body issue. Hjalmarsson has yet to earn a point this season, but he's racked up seven hits and 19 blocks in 13 games this year. Hjalmarsson will enter the lineup on the third defensive pairing, replacing Ilya Lyubushkin.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Could return against LA
According to coach Rick Tocchet, Hjalmarsson (upper body) "is a good possibility" for Thursday's game against the Kings, Alexander Kinkopf of the Coyotes' official website reports. Another update on Hjalmarsson's status should surface following Thursday's morning skate. The 33-year-old blueliner has gone scoreless through 13 games this campaign, but he's racked up 19 blocked shots over that span.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Unavailable versus Blues
Hjalmarsson (upper body) will be sidelined for Monday's clash with St. Louis, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports. Hjalmarsson has yet to register a point in 13 games this season. Given his lack of offensive upside these days, fantasy players are unlikely to be impacted by the 33-year-old blueliner's absence. Once cleared to play, Hjalmarsson will likely bump Jason Demers from the lineup.... See More ... See Less -
Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Out for Saturday's game
Hjalmarsson (upper body) won't play in Saturday's game versus the Blues, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports. Hjalmarsson exited Friday's game with an upper-body injury, and in addition to Saturday's game, he's expected to miss Monday's game against the Blues as well. Jason Demers will enter the defensive rotation in Hjalmarsson's place for the time being.... See More ... See Less
