2020 Tour Championship leaderboard breakdown, takeaways: Dustin Johnson holds slim lead on strong field

Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm let the rest of the field catch up to them on Saturday in Round 2 of the 2020 Tour Championship. The final pairing of the day shot a combined 4 over on the day at East Lake Golf Club and was probably lucky it ended up as good as it did considering some others who shot up the leaderboard over the course of the second set of 18 holes.

Johnson still leads by a single stroke, but we have a ballgame now going into the last two rounds. There are eight golfers within five strokes of D.J., including some big-hitters like Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy. Moving Day will be of paramount importance Sunday with millions on the line at the final event of the 2019-20 PGA Tour season.

Let's take a look at how Round 2 went down and who inserted themselves into the conversation to win this tournament over the final 36 holes of the season.

1. Dustin Johnson (-13): Incredibly, D.J. hit just two (!) fairways but he managed his way around the course and scored when he needed to. His 70 won't win any awards, and it was middle of the pack in Round 2. However, due to his pre-tournament lead of 10 under, he'll enter Sunday's third round retaining the top of the board. It was certainly shakier for him than it's been in a while, which is something to watch for entering Sunday. Sometimes D.J. gets rolling in one direction (either good or bad!), and he can't stop until he gets to the end.

2. Sungjae Im (-12): He could not have hit the ball better in Round 2. Literally, he's never hit his irons as well as he hit them in the second round at East Lake on Saturday. Im's 64 was the round of the day, and he's climbed all the way from a 4 under starting point to the final pairing on Sunday afternoon. He can absolutely win this thing, and his William Hill odds (+750) currently reflect that reality. The difficult part for him will be following up that all-time iron performance over the next two with so many horses around him.

3. Xander Schauffele (-11): Let's not act surprised that the leader in strokes gained at this course over the last 10 years crushed in Round 2 on Saturday. Schauffele closed with three birdies in his last four holes, and only a slightly askew drive at the 18th kept him from making it four in a row to end the day. I'm wary that he's first in putting thus far, but he's three strokes better than he was at the halfway point in 2017 when he went on to win.

4. Justin Thomas (-10): The numbers this week for J.T. are astounding. He's first in strokes gained from tee to green and last in strokes gained putting. If he makes anything at all over the next two days, he's probably going to end up winning. Here's a nice summation of his first two rounds.

T5. Collin Morikawa, Tyrrell Hatton, Jon Rahm (-9): Morikawa shot one of the rounds of the day with a 65 before the leaders finished up. He played his way back into the tournament after a 1-over 71 on Friday. The difference? Well ... everything. Morikawa, somewhat incredibly, improved by almost a full stroke in every strokes-gained category with the biggest turnaround coming with his putter. He gained 4.3 more strokes on Saturday than he did on Friday with the flat stick. He's all the way back in it. Good thing, too, as my one-and-done season rests on his shoulders. Rahm on the other hand was awful on Saturday. Only Marc Leishman went higher than his 74, and a lot of it came on approach shots. His worst hole was the 16th where he started his tee shot out to the right on the watery par 3 and it never course-corrected.

T8. Rory McIlroy, Brendon Todd (-8): Friday, McIlroy played the back nine in 30 strokes. Saturday, he played it in 35 stokes. The two-time winner here didn't hit his irons as well in Round 2 as he did in Round 1. The worst of these came at the par-5 last hole when he hit a shot I'm pretty sure all of us have hit at one point or another. Still, he's only five back with 36 to go at a place where he's clearly comfortable. Sunday is a big day; he'll need to get into the top three or four to make noise on Monday afternoon.

Sungjae co-leads after making birdie at the last. He hit an absolutely filthy second shot into this green to set up an eagle putt. Dropped a 64 in Round 2.

Wow, Rahm doubles the 15th, and DJ bogeys it. JT and Sungjae are now one back, and Morikawa and Hatton are right in it as well.

Xander coming up hard around the third turn. He's -10 after making a nice birdie on No. 16. Into solo 5th behind DJ, Rahm, JT and Sungjae.

Oh no, Rahm in the water on No. 15. Never had a chance. He's about to drop at least one shot on the par 3.

Rory makes it, which was great. He's two back of JT and Sungjae going to the last three holes.

Rory has a mid-sized par putt on the 15th. Needs to make it to stay -9 and just out of the top four, which is currently DJ, Rahm, JT and Sungjae.
