The PGA Championship is just past the horizon, and many of the PGA Tour's top players will be making final preparations this week at the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson. K.H. Lee was a surprise winner in 2021, but the top contenders this year are expected to be players like world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth. 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson golf expert picks
One player Gates isn't hesitating to back this week is Scheffler, who has been nearly unbeatable since his win in Phoenix in February. He has three more wins since then, including the Masters, and the 25-year-old has been locked in. He is hitting a ton of greens and making most of his putts, a clear winning formula. He is fourth in greens in regulation (71.26 percent) and 20th in strokes gained putting and averages almost five birdies per round. That puts him fifth on tour in scoring average (69.68). He was 47th here last year, but that was a lifetime ago given his surge.
On the other hand, Spieth's formula hasn't quite been working. His win at the RBC in his last outing can't be discounted, but he missed the cut the previous week. Spieth has two top-10 finishes in 11 events while missing three cuts. The Dallas native and three-time major winner had a resurgence last season, but he has been mostly struggling so far in this campaign. Spieth is 111th in scoring average (71.18), largely because of his putting. He is 186th in strokes gained on the green. He was ninth last season at Craig Ranch, but Gates isn't expecting that this year.
