At this point, the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup are essentially just trading captains and vice captains. The U.S. captain for the 2017 Presidents Cup, Steve Stricker, announced on Tuesday that Jim Furyk would be one of his vice captains. Furyk joins Fred Couples, Davis Love III and Tiger Woods in assisting Stricker this year.

Furyk, Stricker and Woods were vice captains for Love at the Ryder Cup in 2016.

“I’m so happy to have Jim be a part of this team,” said Stricker. “He’s a friend of mine, and he’s been a mainstay of these teams. I don’t know how many have you played on, 15, 17 teams; I don’t know how many teams you’ve played on, but you’ve played on a tremendous amount of teams and couldn’t be happier to announce Jim Furyk as our fourth assistant captain.”

Furyk, who will captain the U.S. team at the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, echoed the sentiment.

“I knew that someone would ask about The Ryder Cup and Paris coming up, and I am looking forward to that and I’m very excited about it,” said Furyk. “I would lie to say that being part of this team will definitely help me in this preparations; I’d also be slighting the Presidents Cup to tell you that I love this event, as well.

“I’ve played in seven. I served as an assistant captain last time. (2015 captain) Jay (Haas) was nice enough to bring me on when I was hurt and I wasn’t able to compete. These guys that will be playing, these are my friends, the guys that I’ve fought hard for in this event.”

Stricker was also asked about Woods, who will serve as another one of his assistant captains. The outlook for Woods, who has not played since the beginning of February in Dubai, did not sound all that encouraging.

“He’s working hard at it,” Stricker told ESPN’s Bob Harig on Tuesday. “But I don’t think he’s doing that well physically. If he’s not able to swing the way he wants to swing or has the power, the game can be pretty tough. It’s amazing, you need every fiber of your body. If your big toe is hurting, you can have an issue. It’s crazy. You need to be healthy. If not it’s a tough game.’’

Woods could commit to the Arnold Palmer Invitational next week. He has won there eight times, and it was presumed all along that he would play. But things are not going according to plan, and now he might not. He also has a slot in the Masters a month from now. It remains to be seen whether he will play in either event.

The Presidents Cup will be played at Liberty National Golf Club from Sept. 26 to Oct. 1.
