A second no-hitter would have put Anibal Sanchez in a select group.
But so does a fourth one-hitter.
Only 24 pitchers in history have thrown more than one no-hitter. Only 27 have as many as four one-hitters.
Sanchez came within two outs of joining the first group Friday night. Instead, he joined the second, as Joe Mauer's one-out single in the ninth was the only blemish in his 6-0 victory againstthe Twins.
Sanchez threw a no-hitter with the Marlins in 2006 against the Diamondbacks. His first three one-hitters also came with the Marlins, one in 2010 against the Giants and two in 2011 (against the Rockies and Pirates).
Sanchez is the only active pitcher with as many as four one-hitters. Matt Cain, Tim Hudson and R.A. Dickey each have three.
The all-time leader in one-hitters? Same as the all-time leader in no-hitters.
Nolan Ryan had 12 one-hitters. Bob Feller also had 12.
No one else has more than six.
Anibal Sanchez is only 29. He has plenty of time to catch up.
