Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon told the 94WIP Morning Show in Philadelphia on Monday that he dealt with a hip issue in 2013.
"I had a little hip issue that I didn't really talk about last year a whole lot," Papelbon said. "I'm not one to come out and make excuses as why [velocity] is down or why we're not doing good, or anything like that. I posted up everyday still and I went out there and I tried to do the best that I can."
Papelbon, who had a 2.92 ERA and 1.14 WHIP last season, saw his average fastball velocity dip to a career-low 92 mph (his career mark is 94.4 mph). So far this spring, though, reports are that Papelbon's fastball velocity has returned.
