Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Five RBI in Triple-A National Championship
Mejia went 5-for-5 with a double, five RBI and three runs in Memphis' 14-4 win over Durham in the Triple-A National Championship Game on Tuesday.
It was a sensational finish to the season for the 27-year-old, who slashed .273/.316/.329 overall in 108 games with the Redbirds in 2018. Tuesday's tally represented the first five-hit performance for Mejia at the professional level, and it capped off a stellar postseason for him during which he generated a .394 average and nine RBI over nine contests. Despite a solid campaign, Mejia's potential path to the big leagues remains murky, even considering he's capable of playing all four infield spots. The Cardinals boast three productive under-30 players in Jedd Gyorko, Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong, along with a slugging veteran in Matt Carpenter whose pop is an essential part of their lineup.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Dropped from 40-man
Mejia cleared waivers and was outrighted off the Cardinals' 40-man roster Monday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
Mejia was dropped from the Cardinals' 40-man roster after struggling in his first taste of the majors, hitting just .109/.146/.174 in 29 games. With Paul DeJong, Aledmys Diaz and Greg Garcia ahead of him on the depth chart, Mejia doesn't have a clear path to the majors with the Cardinals in the near future.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Hitless in finale
Mejia went 0-for-4 in Sunday's season-ending 6-1 loss to the Brewers.
Mejia couldn't parlay his September callup into much production, as he finished just 2-for-32 in what was his second big-league stint. The 26-year-old prospect enjoyed what was easily the most successful stop of his pro career during his 55-game stint at Triple-A Memphis this season, generating a .335/.381/.466 line over 224 plate appearances. However, with Paul DeJong having seized the Cardinals' starting shortstop job with a spectacular rookie campaign -- and Aledmys Diaz still very much a factor as well -- Mejia's path to the big leagues is very murky heading into the offseason.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Returns to Cardinals
Mejia was called up by St. Louis on Friday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
Mejia has spent the last seven weeks with Triple-A Memphis after earning his first big-league stint toward the end of June. In 10 games with the Cardinals, he went 3-for-14 during his brief opportunity. Mejia likely won't see much more action this time around, but should provide added infield depth for St. Louis moving forward.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Bound for Triple-A
Mejia was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Mejia was called up to provide depth following the demotion of Aledmys Diaz, but failed to make a real impression in limited playing time, mainly being passed over for starts in favor of Greg Garcia and Paul DeJong. He returns to Memphis, where he was slashing .263/.333/.289 over 11 games following a mid-season promotion from Double-A. Kolten Wong was reinstated from the 10-day DL in a corresponding move.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Takes seat Monday
Mejia is out of the lineup Monday against the Marlins.
After connecting on his first career home run in Saturday's win over the Nationals, Mejia was awarded a second straight start Sunday, but he couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Manager Mike Matheny has shown a preference for using Greg Garcia and Paul DeJong as his middle-infield combination while Kolten Wong (triceps) has been on the disabled list, so it appears Mejia will find himself on the bench to start most games.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Smacks first big-league homer Saturday
Mejia went 2-for-3 with two RBI from a solo home run and a run-scoring single in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Nationals.
The rookie was responsible for all of the Cardinals' scoring on a night in which Michael Wacha and Gio Gonzalez engaged in an intense pitcher's duel. Mejia is getting his first exposure to big-league arms after five-plus minor-league campaigns, so some struggles are to be expected. However, now that he's gotten his first major-league hit and home run out of the way, he's likely to move forward with a healthy dose of confidence.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Making big-league debut Thursday
Mejia is starting at second base and batting seventh Thursday against the Diamondbacks, Jody Jackson of Fox Sports Arizona reports.
St. Louis' demotion of Aledmys Diaz opens up time in the middle infield for the 26-year-old Mejia, who isn't thriving at the plate this year (.251/.305/.366 with three home runs in 251 plate appearances for Double-A Springfield) but will get a tryout.

Cardinals' Alex Mejia: Joins Cardinals on Wednesday
Mejia was promoted to the big leagues for the first time prior to Wednesday's game against Arizona, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.
Mejia has spent the bulk of the 2017 season with Double-A Springfield, with his past 11 games played at the Triple-A level with Memphis. Between the two, he has batted .253/.309/.355 with three home runs and 27 RBI this year, and could see some time at the middle infield positions with Aledmys Diaz being sent down to Memphis in his place. The team also shifted Alex Reyes to the 60-day DL to make room for Mejia on the 40-man roster.
