Washington Wizards head coach Randy Wittman has signed a contract extension, the team announced on Tuesday. The new deal will be worth about $9 million over three years, but the final season is a team option, according to the Washington Post's Michael Lee.
The deal was reportedly close last week, but the Wizards made it official on Tuesday and will have a news conference on Wednesday.
"This team and this organization have made significant strides over the last two-and-a-half seasons and I'm excited to be a part of the next step in that process," Wittman said in a statement. "The players and staff all feel that this is the beginning of something special and we’re dedicated to building on our positive accomplishments while striving to improve and reach the next level of success."
This season, Washington ended a five-year playoff drought and reached the second round for the first time since 2005. The Wizards went 44-38 and earned the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Wittman took over from Flip Saunders in the middle of the 2011-2012 season and has a 91-122 regular-season record since then. It was predictable that Wittman would be back, but he needs to improve the team's offense if Washington is going to keep going in the right direction.
