Draft Scouting Report:

Rating: 68.63 (Role player)

Pro Comparison: Eli Rogers

Strengths:

Johnson, a former Iowa State transfer, primarily lines up in the slot but he shows a knack for playing outside as well. In six games last season he had at least 117 receiving yards. He's undersized but built to to handle playing in the middle of the field, he shows good build-up speed, and creates separation on comebacks, and he can stress Cover 2 shells on seam and post routes with speed to get to the third level. He has the ability to take slants to house vs. man coverage -- he has runaway speed in space, but needs to build up to it.

Weaknesses:

He is likely more a possession receiver at the next level who will make his living in the middle of the field. He will sometimes struggle to get off press man coverage, and he'll need to get stronger to not get knocked off routes. NFL offensive coordinators will have to scheme him open because of his lack of functional strength and he'll need to improve in contested-catch situations.

Accolades:

  • 2021: Third in AAC in rec (83) and rec yards (1,087)
  • First among WRs with 14 bench press reps at combine (only WR who benched)
