The Packers announced a series of roster moves in advance of Thursday’s preseason opener at San Diego. They signed veteran OL Reggie Wells, claimed WR Andy Brewer off waivers from Philadelphia, placed G Jaymes Brooks on reserve/physically unable to perform and put T Mike McCabe on injured reserve.
Wells (6-4, 318) is in his 10th season and has started 91 games, mostly at LG, although he also has experience at tackle. He was drafted in the sixth round by the Cardinals in 2003, playing in Arizona until 2009. He appeared in eight games with the Eagles in 2010 and was with the Panthers for five games last season. Wells’ signing helps shore up Green Bay’s offensive line, where injuries have raised concern over the unit’s depth.
Brewer (6-2, 216), a first-year player from Northwestern, was signed by the Eagles on July 31. He played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League from 2010-2011. As a senior in 2009, Brewer caught 57 passes for 925 yards and nine touchdowns.
Brooks, an undrafted rookie from Virginia Tech, hadn't practiced at Green Bay’s training camp because of a hamstring injury. McCabe, an undrafted rookie from Holy Cross, injured his hip two weeks ago and hadn’t practiced since.
