Besides waiting on a finalization of matters either way with goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, the Calgary Flames had one other bit of business to take care of this offseason; re-sign T.J. Brodie. They took care of that on Wednesday.
The defenseman, who was a restricted free agent, signed his new two-year extension on Wednesday. The Flames announced the contract is worth $4.25 million, thus Brodie will have a $2.15 million salary cap hit for the next two seasons.
Right now this is a pretty great deal for the Flames, Brodie is a young defenseman who has finally made his way into a mainstay in the NHL. He played in 47 of the 48 games this past season, averaging a little more than 20 minutes per game. In that time he had two goals and 12 assists.
Brodie, who recently turned 23, has been seen as one of Calgary's better prospects, putting up good numbers at the AHL level where he was an All-Star in 2011. Considering his role and production have been going up, it's a good deal now but could be expensive in two years from now when Brodie will be due a new contract. However if Brodie proves he's worth a good raise at that time then that means things are going well and the Flames likely wouldn't complain too much at that point.
