Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith had a rough first period on Sunday in Boston. Not only did Jimmy Howard pass the puck off his skate that led to a Justin Florek goal, but he took a beating from the Bruins' physicality as well.

It culminated with a scrum as the first period came to a close and Smith's frustrations boiling over a bit. He found himself in a dance with Bruins monster captain Zdeno Chara and this was the result.

That was probably not the tree Smith wanted to bark up. I mean, his jabs could barely even reach Chara.

Smith flirted with danger there but luckily for him, the linesman came in and ended the skirmish before gloves were dropped. Each player received a two-minute roughing minor and that was it. Well, except for the everlasting images of Chara laughing at Smith.

Brendan's brother Reilly plays for the Bruins so certainly the first intermission conversation in the Bruins dressing room must have been interesting.
