  • Jimmy Howard: Expected to retire

Howard will announce his retirement in the next couple days.

CBC's Hockey Night in Canada reported that Ken Holland of the Oilers reached out to Howard to try to solve his team's goaltending woes and Howard turned him down flat. He's loving life with his kids and has started paperwork for retirement. The two-time All-Star played his whole career with Detroit and sits third all-time in wins (246).

  • Jimmy Howard: Will hit free agency

Howard will not be re-signed by the Red Wings, Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News reports.

Howard saw action in 27 games for Detroit this season in which he posted a 2-23-2 record with a career-worst 4.20 GAA and .882 save percentage. If the netminder decides to continue playing next year, he could be a decent backup option for a team in need of a veteran No. 2 option. Without a clear starting spot, the Syracuse native is unlikely to provide much in terms of fantasy value.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Forgettable season

Howard only has two wins behind a 4.20 GAA and an .882 save percentage in 27 starts this season.

Detroit's historically poor season is well documented, though few could have predicted the veteran would lose his starting job to journeyman Jonathan Bernier. Howard -- who will turn 36 years old next Thursday -- is cashing out the balance of a one-year, $5.1 million contract with the Wings; he'll be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Pulled in blowout loss

Howard got the hook in Thursday's 7-1 loss to the Wild after allowing five goals on 17 shots.

Howard lasted just 12:05 into the second period before being replaced by Jonathan Bernier. Bernier was less busy but hardly more effective, as he also posted a sub-.800 save percentage with two goals allowed on nine shots. Starting a Red Wings goalie in fantasy, especially after the team's trade deadline selloff, is just asking for trouble.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Slated to start

According to Ansar Khan of MLive.com, Howard was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, which suggests he'll get the start in goal in Thursday's home matchup with Minnesota.

Howard had another disastrous outing in his last start Feb. 16 against Pittsburgh, surrendering four goals on just 16 shots before being replaced by Jonathan Bernier in the second period of the eventual 5-1 loss. The 35-year-old backstop will try to bounce back in a home matchup with a Wild club that's 12-15-2 on the road this year.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Pummeled by Pens

Howard stopped 12 of 16 shots before being replaced midway through the second period of Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Penguins.

He really had no chance on any of the four goals, but Howard still got the hook as coach Jeff Blashill tried in vain to change the game's momentum. The veteran netminder is still looking for his first win since Oct. 29, and on the season Howard is saddled with a 4.08 GAA and .886 save percentage.

Howard has deserved a much better fate in his past five games, as he's gone 0-5-0 with a 3.49 GAA and .914 save percentage. The 35-year-old will draw a tough matchup against a Penguins offense that ranks eighth in the league in goals per game this campaign (3.27).

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Takes tough loss to Jackets

Howard made 42 saves in Friday's 2-0 loss to the Blue Jackets.

Columbus' final goal was scored into an empty net. Howard set a new season high for saves in one of his strongest performances of the year, but it was all for naught as the Detroit offense couldn't get anything going. The veteran netminder remains winless in his last 18 outings, and on the season Howard is a stunning 2-21-2 with a 3.98 GAA and .889 save percentage.

Howard hasn't picked up a win since Oct. 29 against the Oilers, posting a disastrous 0-15-2 record while registering a 4.56 GAA and .871 save percentage in 17 appearances since that date. The 35-year-old American will attempt to defy the odds and snap his unbelievably lengthy losing streak in a tough road matchup with a hot Columbus club that's gone 4-0-1 in its last five games.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Bounced by Blueshirts

Howard made 35 saves in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers.

The veteran netminder held New York off the scoreboard through the first period, but Howard coughed up three goals in the second to put the game out of reach for Detroit's sputtering offense. Incredibly, he remains winless since October, going 0-15-2 over his last 17 starts and putting Howard far from fantasy utility in most formats.

Howard has struggled mightily in the month of January, compiling an 0-6-1 record while posting a sub-par 4.13 GAA and .882 save percentage. The veteran backstop will attempt to end the month on a high note by picking up his third win of the season in a road matchup with a Rangers team that's averaging 3.48 goals per game at home this campaign, sixth in the NHL.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Gets starting nod Wednesday

Howard will get the road start Wednesday against the Wild, Jessi Pierce of The Athletic reports.

Howard continues to garner a bulk of the starts with Jonathan Bernier (lower body) on the mend, and the former is looking to snap a 15-game losing streak. He's been showered by pucks lately, making at least 37 saves in three straight games, but pitiful offensive support leaves him on the hook for losses. The Wild rank 15th in the league with 3.30 goals per home contest.

The 35-year-old goalie dropped to 2-18-2 with a 4.11 GAA and an .883 save percentage in 22 starts. He'll continue to see most of the starts with Jonathan Bernier (lower body) sidelined, but fantasy owners can do far better than what Howard's produced this season.

Howard will have his work cut out for him as he seeks his first win since Oct. 29. He's performed well lately, though, recording a .932 save percentage over his last two starts, but the Avalanche rank third in the league with 3.83 goals per home game.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Starting again Saturday

Howard will be in goal Saturday night against the Panthers, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Howard fell in overtime Friday but gets the start on the second night of a back-to-back. The Red Wings' netminder hasn't won in forever, with Howard's last victory coming back on Oct. 29, so it's best to avoid rolling with him in fantasy at all costs.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Hasn't won in 14 starts

Howard made 34 saves Saturday in a 4-1 loss to the Panthers.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Takes tough loss in OT

Howard stopped 35 shots in Friday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Penguins.

The veteran netminder blanked Pittsburgh through two periods, but a Bryan Rust power-play tally early in the third ended Howard's shutout bid, and then Sidney Crosby potted another goal with the man advantage in OT to hand him his 13th straight loss (0-11-2 over that stretch). This was by far Howard's best recent performance -- the last time he allowed fewer than three goals in a start was Nov. 24 -- and on the season the 35-year-old is saddled with a brutal 4.12 GAA and .882 save percentage.

  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: In goal Friday

Howard will get the starting nod against the Penguins at home Friday, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Howard is stuck in a 12-game losing streak and hasn't secured a victory since Oct. 29 versus Edmonton. During his slump, the netminder has posted a 5.04 GAA and .850 save percentage. A clash with a Penguins squad that is averaging 3.38 goals probably isn't the best matchup for Howard to get his season back on track.
