New York residents also can’t bet on college props at all, no matter what schools are involved or where the game is being played.

New York is in a unique position just because of how massive of a state it is and its potential bettors. No state bets more dollars per month than New York. Despite a 3.5-year head start for New Jersey, New York is likely to pass it in total sports betting revenue earned in the coming months. 

New York offered just nine licenses when they decided to legalize online sports betting. Of those nine licenses, two have been sold and two others have seen little to no traction amongst local bettors. Only six of the nine licenses have been put to good use. 

New York has a 51% tax rate, meaning sportsbooks are taxed 51%. This has resulted in a lot of sportsbooks overlooking New York when it comes to promotions and offers because the math just doesn’t make sense for them. 

Additionally, New York has strict rules when it comes to betting on college sports. Specifically, you can’t bet on college player props or any college teams that are inside the state. In addition, New Yorkers can’t bet on player awards or drafts for similar reasons.

Fanatics Sportsbook launched in late February 2024. After purchasing PointsBet, Fanatics took over their New York license which allowed them to launch in New York. PointsBet was one of nine originally approved licenses.

ESPN BET and Penn Gaming are expected to launch in New York sometime in 2024.

Senator Joe Addabbo Jr. and Assemblyman Gary Pretlow announced plans to push for online casino legalization in 2024, citing the massive revenue potential from online casinos in NY.

New York has gone over $400 million in handle for nine straight weeks and 26 times in 27 weeks. The only week to fail to reach that mark was the week before the Super Bowl.

Nobody bets more money on sports than New Yorkers, and it’s not particularly close. It’s a massive state with a lot of betting options. There are three NFL teams, three NHL teams, two NBA teams and two MLB teams for bettors to choose from locally. Here are the figures from the last six months:
