Les Miles and LSU will have one less option available when it comes to finding a replacement for Zach Mettenberger.
LSU quarterback Stephen Rivers told
“There’s an opportunity for me to hopefully play somewhere else,” Rivers said. “I’ve had a great three years here, maybe not necessarily gotten on the field as much as I wanted to, but I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”
Rivers, the younger brother of San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, is scheduled to graduate this spring which means that, wherever he transfers, he will not have to sit out a season before regaining eligibility. He also has two years of eligibility remaining. As for why Rivers has decided to leave, his father, Steve Rivers, says that LSU's offense is "going in a different direction." Which means we should probably expect to see LSU add more spread elements to the offense this season, as Rivers is your prototypical pro-style quarterback.
As for who LSU has left to battle for the starting job, you have to think that Anthony Jennings has the inside track seeing how he passed Rivers on the depth chart last season and replaced Mettenberger following his injury. Brandon Harris, Hayden Rettig and former Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden will compete with Jennings for the job.
