Michigan State defensive tackle Damon Knox is leaving the team and will skip playing in 2016 in order to move on to a career in law enforcement.

The school announced Knox's departure from the program on Friday, noting that the redshirt senior was no longer seeking a waiver from the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility. Knox participated in spring practice with the Spartans but will not be with the team this fall.

"Damon has been a major contributor to our success the past five years," coach Mark Dantonio said in a statement. "We appreciate his time and commitment to the Michigan State football program and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Knox's departure is yet another blow for the Spartans' defensive line, which is looking to replace three starters from 2015 including star defensive end Shilique Calhoun. Beyond those three graduating seniors, Michigan State lost two other defensive linemen this spring as Montez Sweat and Craig Evans left the team.

Without Knox, who was expected to see a good amount of playing time, the Spartans will missing one of their most experienced linemen. Knox appeared in 38 games over his five seasons with Michigan State, recording 43 tackles in a reserve role.
