Formenton scored two goals on seven shots and added three hits in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout win over the Canucks. Formenton hadn't gotten on the scoresheet since his goal March 26 versus the Panthers, so this was an unexpected burst of offense. The 22-year-old has showed promise in spurts this season with 17 tallies, 13 helpers, 152 shots on net, 98 hits and a minus-12 rating through 74 outings. Formenton has 11 goals and 22 points through 42 games in his first full season in the NHL, and if he winds up missing additional time, Ottawa could have trouble replacing him in the top six with Josh Norris (shoulder) and Drake Batherson (ankle) still on injured reserve.

Perhaps the 22-year-old winger still has another level to his game that he's yet to unlock, but Formenton's current fourth-line role on one of the league's worst teams just doesn't cut it for fantasy purposes.

  • Senators' Alex Formenton: Struggles with illness in 2020-21

Formenton only played 20 games during the 2020-21 season, as illness kept him from establishing himself in Ottawa. When Formenton was able to play a full season at AHL Belleville in 2019-20, he tallied 53 points in 61 games. Keep him on your watch list as a pickup possibility if the Senators give him an opportunity.
