Final round recap of the 2014 PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy won his fourth major championship in stunning, thrilling fashion on Sunday at Valhalla.
The end of the 2014 PGA Championship was not only one of the wildest golf tournaments I've ever seen but one of the wildest sporting events I've ever seen -- maybe of my lifetime.
Rory McIlroy won (I have no idea how) and I tried to document everything that happened here.
9:03 p.m. -- I have no idea what the hell just happened but I know it was awesome and I know Rory McIlroy has four majors and I know the Masters starts in 242 days. Thanks for joining us all week for the best major I've ever covered.
8:45 p.m. -- Rory McIlroy won. I think.
8:37 p.m. -- I don't know what to write.
8:34 p.m. -- I don't know what is happening.
I can honestly say I've never seen a foursome on the last hole of a major. And I've seen a lot of majors.— Dan Jenkins (@danjenkinsgd) August 11, 2014
8:33 p.m. -- I mean, look at this!
8:31 p.m. -- My goodness.
Would've loved to have had a heart monitor on Rory while that ball was in the air.— Mike O'Malley (@GD_MikeO) August 11, 2014
8:30 p.m. -- Fowler and Mickelson are letting McIlroy and Wiesberger play through. This is amazing.
8:28 p.m. -- This could be it.
8:23 p.m. -- Yeah, this is true.
If @McIlroyRory gets this in the house this back-9 becomes career-defining. Back from the brink, fighting off 3 top players: his greatest W.— Alan Shipnuck (@AlanShipnuck) August 11, 2014
8:21 p.m. -- Rory's a boss. Tiger just turned this thing off.
8:13 p.m. -- Do you think Phil will lay up on No. 18 or go for it in two?
8:12 p.m. -- Rory is up one with two left. It might take an eagle in the dark on No. 18 for somebody to take it.
8:06 p.m. -- Rory is alone at the top somehow.
8:02 p.m. -- All in.
Proposal: Match play tomorrow with Rickie/Phil vs. Stenson/Rory. Winners go another 18 head to head for the Wanamaker.— Adam Sarson (@Adam_Sarson) August 11, 2014
7:56 p.m. -- Haha!
"Son...this is what winning looks like." (To Cub fan/son)....."Gee thanks Dad." http://t.co/kH41IWd1zn— Paul Pabst (@PaulPabst) August 10, 2014
7:54 p.m. -- If Phil hits a 25-footer on No. 16 and runs after it and points I'm going to die.
7:50 p.m. -- Monday morning playoff if it's needed.
IF there's a playoff, it will be three-hole aggregate starting tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.— Jason Sobel (@JasonSobelGC) August 10, 2014
7:41 p.m. -- Bernd Wiesberger is basically being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to have a front-row seat to one of the best majors of the last five years.
7:37 p.m. -- David Feherty just said "[Rory's] reaction to that last putt I think would have knocked out Muhammad Ali."
7:33 p.m. -- Rory ties it up. Wow.
7:20 p.m. -- How awesome is this?

7:14 p.m. -- Here's Phil from forever for par.
7:09 p.m. -- Rory looks soulless right now. I can't tell if that's good or bad.
7:05 p.m. -- Haha!
CBS is going to get an FCC violation is Henrik Stenson is going flash his stones like that approach on 13. #PinSeeking— No Laying Up (@NoLayingUp) August 10, 2014
7:03 p.m. -- Can we dump Bernd and just let Rors play in with Rickie and Phil?
6:58 p.m. -- Here's the insane second shot from Rory at No. 10 that ended in eagle. (h/t Big Lead)
6:56 p.m. -- Rory is back in it with an eagle at No. 10. I'm at a loss. This is too much. I'm out of adjectives and we have eight holes left.
6:48 p.m. -- Here's the putt that might have won the PGA Championship.
6:46 p.m. -- My gosh, if Mikko Ilonen wins this thing.
6:43 p.m. -- This is bizarre. Nobody moves even though it looks like somebody got smoked.
6:35 p.m. -- It seems like there's a negative amount of energy surrounding the Rory McIlroy group right now.
6:32 p.m. -- I do love this:
6:30 p.m. -- Phil Mickelson is tied for the lead going to the back nine. Wowza.
6:25 p.m. -- What if Rory is down one and hits his drive on No. 18 at, say, 8:40 p.m.?
6:23 p.m. -- Ryan Palmer has a ton of #TourSauce in him, doesn't he?
6:19 p.m. -- It feels like things have been kind of slow today even though a lot is happening. Kind of a weird day rhythm-wise.
6:09 p.m. -- Fowler is playing like an absolute boss.
6:01 p.m. -- Phil just destroyed a shot from 240 yards out in the first cut right at a pin on a par 5 because it's Sunday at a major. Of course.
5:52 p.m. -- This from Fowler is awesome.
That moment when Rickie Fowler realizes he has a share of the lead at the PGA Championship... pic.twitter.com/qd6rR97j2q— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) August 10, 2014
5:48 p.m. -- Is Rory fading? He sure isn't playing very well today. Of the top 30 he's the only one over par.
5:36 p.m. -- Big Easy running out of holes here. Quite the performance, though.
5:18 p.m. -- Rickie Fowler leads by himself after this chip-in.
5:05 p.m. -- I would agree.
Of all the "grow golf" initiatives out there, I think having Phil, Rory and Rickie tied for the lead at a major is the best idea yet.— Ben Crane (@bencranegolf) August 10, 2014
5:02 p.m. -- Here's the PGA Championship leaderboard right now:
4:56 p.m. -- Here's Phil's first birdie:
4:53 p.m. -- Feels like it's a good thing for Phil and Rickie to play together today. They'll feed off that like crazy.
4:42 p.m. -- This is strong work.
4:41 p.m. -- This is so incredible.
4:24 p.m. -- Phil birdies No. 1 so that's amazing. He's two back and Rory's in the rough off the tee.
4:17 p.m. -- I'm genuinely giddy for this final round and the leaders are just now teeing off.
4:11 p.m. -- The #protraj on that Fowler drive was a middle finger right towards McIlroy.
3:54 p.m. -- Big Easy is 4 under thru 6 if that's any indication of how easy the scoring is out there. Just four back, too.
3:25 p.m. -- By the way, this shot earlier by Thorbjorn Olesen was insane:
3:24 p.m. -- I just texted my buddy this question: "If Rickie shoots __________ he wins. His response: "Rory."
3:06 p.m. -- This does not seem great:
Monty calls the course "borderline unplayable," says the PGA forced the players out prematurely because of the late tee times.— Alan Shipnuck (@AlanShipnuck) August 10, 2014
G-Mac says the conditions are "not fair" due to mud on balls and casual water. "Common sense" should have led to lift, clean and place.— Alan Shipnuck (@AlanShipnuck) August 10, 2014
2:44 p.m. -- Swanny!
2:30 p.m. -- Here's when the leaders are teeing off:
2:14 p.m. -- Sunset in Louisville is 8:42 p.m.
2:13 p.m. -- Okay, we're back at it.
Play resuming at 2:40, last tee time now 4:18. #PGAChampionship— Brian Wacker (@pgatour_brianw) August 10, 2014
1:50 p.m. -- This is hilarious:
1:49 p.m. -- Yeah, we could be looking at a Monday finish.
Play won't resume until 2:10 p.m. at the very earliest. That would be a 90-minute delay. Final pairing would finish around 8:30. Pushing it.— Jason Sobel (@JasonSobelGC) August 10, 2014
1:46 p.m. -- No they weren't, Lee.
White trousers were maybe not the best idea I've ever had!— Lee Westwood (@WestwoodLee) August 10, 2014
1:45 p.m. -- Here's the craziest look at what the rain is doing at the PGA Championship:
GIF: Well, at least the sixth green is draining nicely. Twenty minute difference. http://t.co/QmVXFiC4us— Adam Sarson (@Adam_Sarson) August 10, 2014
1:08 p.m. -- There's an indefinite rain delay at the PGA Championship. Here's the story.
1:05 p.m. -- Holy cow!
12:07 p.m. -- What are those pants made of?
12:05 p.m. -- This is incredible.
11:58 a.m. -- I wonder what the number is today. I think Rory might get to 18 which would mean Fowler needs a 64 to get into a playoff and Day and Phil would need 63s. Not sure that's happening.
10:45 a.m. -- Mickelson with some quality #toursauce before Sunday's final round.
9:22 a.m. -- Then there's this:
With more rain at Valhalla, a reminder of Rory's comments one week ago re: Firestone. Don't see him getting caught. pic.twitter.com/vIjVxbiQs6— Will Gray (@WillGrayGC) August 10, 2014
9:21 a.m. -- I do wonder if somebody has a 62 in them today early on. That still might not be enough to catch the Ulsterman.
9:00 a.m. -- Good morning. I need coffee like Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson need Rory McIlroy to get dirreha this morning.
