Kerry Wood has flown back to Chicago to get a cortisone shot in his right (throwing) shoulder, the club announced Tuesday afternoon.

Considering Wood's injury history and the fact that we're less than two weeks into the season, this seems to be a cause for concern. And the revelation that Wood has had these issues since mid-March is more cause for concern.

Apparently when Wood was shut down in spring training the Cubs and Wood passed it off as him saving his aging arm. Tuesday, however, Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer told reporters Wood had to "back off" because of shoulder issues and it "hasn't worked so far." (Chicagotribune.com)

Wood last pitched Friday, and the Cubs are holding out hope Wood will be back sometime this weekend.

Wood, 34, has allowed three hits, three runs and three walks in just 2 2/3 innings this season. He walked in the tying run on opening day and then took the loss in the second game of the season. Since then he's faced four batters and retired them all, striking out three.

This very well could be a minor issue, but the worst is always feared when it comes to Wood and his history. It should be noted, however, he hasn't had a major injury since 2007.
