Following news earlier Tuesday that Johan Santana could be done for the season, ESPN's Adam Rubin reported Tuesday the Mets are considering bringing up prospect Jenrry Mejia to replace him in the club's rotation.

Mejia last appeared in the majors in 2010, when he posted a 4.69 ERA in 30 relief appearances and three starts spanning 39 innings. His season was cut short by Tommy John surgery, which limited him to just five starts at Triple-A Buffalo in 2011.

Although many scouts and prospect analysts think Mejia projects better as a reliever, the Mets appear primed to use him as a starter. Mejia was awful as a reliever at the Triple-A level with Buffalo this season, recording a 5.48 ERA in 16 appearances. He has enjoyed much more success as a starter, posting a 2.03 ERA in seven starts, striking out 31 against just 15 walks.
