Philip Humber's pefect game is forever etched in history. Etched in the minds of the White Sox, however, are what opposing hitters are doing to Humber since that perfecto:.297/.375/.538 with 19 home runs in 303 at-bats.
Those protracted struggles are why the Sox have decided to dispatch Humber, perfect game and all, to the bullpen.
To Humber's credit, he's taking a very un-Roy Oswalt-like approach to the change in role: "I don’t think that going to the bullpen is a demotion," Humber told the Chicago Tribune. "That’s disrespectful to the guys who are in the bullpen to say, 'I’m good enough to start.' Well, I’m hoping I’m good enough to be in the bullpen. That’s the attitude I take as far as whatever role I’m given, whenever they give me the ball, I’m going to do the best I can with it."
It's hard not to like a guy who has that attitude.
Presumably, Humber will become the first pitcher since Catfish Hunter in 1968 to throw a perfect game and make a relief appearance in the same season. So there's that.
