  • Cole Figueroa: Takes position in Rays front office

Figueroa has taken a job as a baseball development assistant in the Rays' front office, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

With that, Figueroa has presumably closed the book on his playing career. He's only 29 and appeared in the majors in each of the past three seasons, but apparently he felt this opportunity was best for him long term. Figueroa played nine professional seasons, walking nearly 100 more times than he struck out in 862 career games in the minors.

  • Marlins' Cole Figueroa: Designated for assignment Friday

Figueroa was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Friday, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.

Figueroa was DFA'd on Friday, along with Cole Gillespie as the Marlins began making roster moves after their 7-person trade with the Padres. Throughout the 2016 season, Figueroa has bounced around quite a bit, playing for each of the Pirates, Dodgers and Marlins on their Triple-A affiliates. Even though he has never shown the ability to hit at the major league level, Figueroa could latch on with another organization looking for some infield depth.

  • Marlins' Cole Figueroa: Signs with Marlins, assigned to Triple-A

Figueroa signed with the Marlins on Saturday and was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

The 29-year-old's defensive versatility -- he can play shortstop, second base and third -- has earned him an opportunity in the Marlins' organization following his departure from Los Angeles, but he will remain in the minors for the time being. Figueroa has hit just .208/.250/.286 in parts of three major league seasons.

  • Cole Figueroa: Becomes free agent

Figueroa declined an outright assignment on Tuesday and became a free agent, Eric Stephen of True Blue LA reports.

Designated for assignment on Friday, Figueroa went through his waiver period unclaimed, but instead of accepting an outright assignment by the Dodgers he elected to become a free agent. The 29-year-old has spent the majority of his 2016 season with Triple-A Indianapolis, a Pirates minor league affiliate, where he compiled a .307/.333/.453 slash line over 20 games. Given his relatively young age and history of success in the minors, it's likely he'll get scooped up by another organization in need of infield depth.

  • Dodgers' Cole Figueroa: Designated for assignment

Figueroa was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Friday, Eric Stephen of SB Nation reports.

A waiver acquisition from Pittsburgh, Figueroa's tenure on the Dodgers' 40-man roster lasted just over a week. Figueroa is a .208/.250/.286 career hitter at the major league level and was 4-for-26 with the Pirates this year, but he can play three infield positions and may appeal to another organization looking for depth.

  • Dodgers' Cole Figueroa: Claimed by Dodgers

Figueroa was claimed by the Dodgers on Tuesday and optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, SB Nation's Eric Stephen reports.

The veteran infielder was recently DFA'd by the Pirates on Friday, but it did not take long for a team to pick him up. The Dodgers swooped in to pick up Figueroa, who can play multiple spots around the infield. Figueroa will start his time with the Dodgers' organization at Triple-A, but he could eventually get promoted should the Dodgers suffer an injury at either second or third base.

  • Pirates' Cole Figueroa: Designated for assignment

Figueroa has been designated for assignment by the Pirates Friday, Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The 28-year-old has been struggling of late in Triple-A Indianapolis. His batting average has fallen from .372 to .307 over the past 10 games. Figueroa, a career .291 hitter in the minors, has a good knack for getting on base while limiting strikeouts. However, he doesn't bring much to the table for power or speed.

  • Pirates' Cole Figueroa: Heads to Triple-A Indianapolis

Figueroa was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Figueroa's departure back to the minors corresponds with Rob Scahill being recalled and Arquimedes Caminero returning from the DL. The majority of Figueroa's game action since his promotion on May 13 came as a pinch hitter, and as a result he failed to gain much momentum, going 4-for-17 (.235) with no extra-base hits.

Figueroa is in the lineup and batting eighth for Monday's game against the Mets.

Figueroa will get a rare start at third base while Jung Ho Kang gets a day off to rest. The 28-year-old from Tallahassee is just 4-for-20 with two RBI and one stolen base on the season.

  • Pirates' Cole Figueroa: Gets rare start Saturday

Figueroa will start at second base Saturday against the Rangers.

He'll get a shot against Yu Darvish with Josh Harrison (flu) still sidelined. Figueroa was hitting .340 in 47 Triple-A at-bats before his recall and went 1-for-2 Friday.

  • Pirates' Cole Figueroa: Recalled by Pirates on Friday

Figueroa was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Figueroa was optioned to Indianapolis in late April, but he earned his way back to the Pirates by posting an .899 OPS over 13 minor league games. He will serve as a backup at several infield positions, and will be used situationally as the only left-handed infielder on the roster besides first base John Jaso.

  • Pirates' Cole Figueroa: Optioned to Triple-A

Figueroa was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

While Figueroa made the Opening Day roster, he failed to crack the lineup for any of the team's first 16 games. He will give way to Jason Rogers on the active roster, but Figueroa's defensive versatility could earn him a ticket back to Pittsburgh in the coming weeks or months.

  • Pirates' Cole Figueroa: Makes Opening Day roster

Figueroa was added to the Pirates' 25-man roster Sunday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Figueroa, who was a non-roster invitee to Pirates camp, earned a reserve infield spot after slashing .260/.321/.340 over 57 plate appearances in spring training. He'll likely see little usage as a depth player for the Pirates, and could be assigned to the minors once Jung-Ho Kang (knee) is activated from the 15-day DL.
