Brewers' Richie Shaffer: Signs minors deal with Brewers
Shaffer signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers on Thursday, Jim Goulart of Brewerfan.net reports.
Shaffer was released by the Indians in early July after posting a .164/.216/.310 slash line in 32 games with Triple-A Columbus. The 27-year-old will report to Triple-A Colorado Springs to bolster the team's outfield depth, as Keon Broxton and Brett Phillips are still currently with the Brewers.

Shaffer was hitting just .164/.216/.310 across 32 games with Triple-A Columbus prior to being let go. The 27-year-old hasn't appeared in the majors since 2016, when he hit .250/.315/.438 across 20 games for the Rays. He'll look to latch on elsewhere as organizational depth.

Indians' Richie Shaffer: Player of the Week in Triple-A
Shaffer was named International League Player of the Week on Monday.
Shaffer went 12-for-29 with three home runs and nine RBI over the award-winning week. In his third season with Triple-A, the outfielder is demonstrating growth that could earn him a big-league call-up later in 2017. He leads the Clippers in homers (13), RBI (48) and runs (31) through 57 games.

Indians' Richie Shaffer: Finding power stroke at Triple-A
Shaffer went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, bumping his team-high RBI total to 43, in Triple-A Columbus' victory on Monday.
A first-round pick in 2012, he posted strong power number at MiLB's lower levels, but those marks declined in recent years at Triple-A and MLB. The 26-year-old has revitalized his power stroke, though, this season with the Clippers. His .492 slugging percentage is seventh best in the International League. Shaffer has 51 games of big-league dirt on his cleats (.213/.310/.410), but the Tribe's outfield depth leaves little room for him at the highest level.

Shaffer was reassigned to the Indians' minor-league camp Sunday.
Shaffer was hoping to win a reserve role in the corner infield, but the contact issues he displayed during Cactus League play (22 strikeouts in 57 at-bats) undermined any chance he had at breaking camp with the team. Expect him to open 2017 with Triple-A Columbus.

Shaffer, the first-round pick of the Rays back in 2012, split time between the majors and Triple-A level last season for Tampa Bay. He appeared in 20 games with the big club but didn't do anything of note outside of his high strikeout percentage.

The Indians designated Shaffer for assignment Monday, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports.
Shaffer will depart his fifth organization of the offseason, after having previously owned 40-man roster spots with the Rays, Mariners, Phillies and Reds. The 25-year-old was a member of the Indians' 40-man roster for less than a week, but if he goes unclaimed off waivers, he'd likely stick in the organization as Triple-A depth. Shaffer has flashed solid pop during his time in the minor, but a lack of contact may prove to be his undoing as he looks to establish himself as a viable big-league option.

Shaffer was claimed off waivers by the Indians on Thursday.
This is the fifth stop so far this offseason for Shaffer, and quite possibly not the last. The 25-year-old slashed .227/.329/.367 with 11 homers in 428 at-bats with the Rays' Triple-A affiliate in 2016, and will merely add depth at first base if he is able to break camp with the big league club.

Just days removed from being designated for assignment by the Phillies, Shaffer has found a new club after being claimed by the Reds. Shaffer spent most of the 2016 season at Triple-A Durham in the Rays' organization, slashing .227/.329/.367 with 11 home runs over 428 at-bats. He'll add organizational depth at first base, but it's far from a guarantee that he'll break camp with the big league club.

The 25-year-old was claimed off waivers by Philadelphia just last week, but with the arrival of Clay Buchholz on Tuesday, the Phillies needed room on the 40-man roster. Shaffer doesn't have the highest batting average in the world, but his power and high propensity to walk are his real calling card, which could intrigue some teams looking for a cheap first baseman with major league experience.

Shaffer will land with his third organization of the month, this time joining the Phillies to likely fill a depth role on the corners. The 25-year-old posted a .695 OPS in 496 plate appearances with Triple-A Durham last season, a major fall from his .937 mark there in 2015, but he did post an improved .250/.315/.438 line in 20 games with the Rays. He should be in the mix for a bench spot during spring training.

Shaffer was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Wednesday.
A spot was needed for Chris Heston and Shaffer, whom the Mariners acquired via trade less than three weeks ago, was the roster casualty. He will now be subjected to waivers. A first-round pick back in 2012, Shaffer has posted a .783 OPS in two seasons at Triple-A but he's hit just .213 in 51 games at the highest level. Still, Shaffer is just 25 and may draw interest from a rebuilding club looking to take a flier.

Shaffer was traded to the Mariners in a five player deal Friday night, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Shaffer has a career .213/.310/.410 line in limited major league action between two seasons and figures to occupy a depth role in the corner positions with Seattle. He also took a large step back this season with Triple-A Durham, going from a .937 OPS in 2015 to .695 in 2016. He'll need to bounce back before he can be reasonably considered for the majors.

Rays' Richie Shaffer: Closes out season with two-hit effort
Shaffer went 2-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs in Sunday's season-ending 6-4 victory over the Rangers.
The 25-year-old thus finishes up his 2016 stint with the big league club by hitting safely in four of his last five contests, with four two-baggers and a pair of multi-hit efforts over that span. Shaffer slashed a respectable .250/.315/.438 over 48 at-bats with the Rays this season, significantly improving on the .189/.307/.392 line he generated over a 74 at-bat sample in 2015 that represented his first exposure to major league pitching. Although this season's cup of coffee in Tampa was encouraging to an extent, it's notable that it followed a Triple-A campaign in which Shafer only managed a .227/.329/.367 line over a much more extensive sample of 496 plate appearances.

Rays' Richie Shaffer: Smacks first homer of season Friday
Shaffer went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Orioles.
Shaffer gave the Rays a 4-0 lead in the second with a 408-foot two-run shot that plated Steven Souza, his first home run this season. Shaffer is just 2-for-11 in four starts in September.

Rays' Richie Shaffer: Starting at DH Monday
Shaffer will start as the designated hitter for Monday's contest with the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
With Logan Morrison (wrist) likely done for the season, Shaffer could see an uptick in playing time as the designated hitter going forward. Manager Kevin Cash is keeping the door open for multiple people to fill the void, but this start is a nice vote of confidence for the 25-year-old.
