Rockies' Stephen Cardullo: Re-ups with Rockies
Cardullo re-signed a minor-league deal with Colorado, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
Cardullo appeared in 15 games with the Rockies in 2017, hitting .143/.250/.143 with three RBI in 32 plate appearances. The outfielder spent most of the year in Double-A, but dealt with a broken wrist that kept him sideline for a couple of months in the summer. Looking ahead, Cardullo will provide additional depth for the club, but is unlikely to make an impact for fantasy purposes. Look for the 30-year-old to play for Triple-A Albuquerque in 2018.

Rockies' Stephen Cardullo: Clubs homer in return from Double-A DL
Cardullo (wrist) went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in his return from the disabled list with Double-A Hartford on Thursday.
Cardullo broke his wrist back in May, but he came back with a bang after a two-month absence. Wrist injuries sometimes sap power, but it doesn't appear to be too much of a concern in this instance. Cardullo will continue to act as organizational depth for the Rockies while he's healthy.

Cardullo is expected to miss two months due to a broken wrist, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. reports.
It seemed strange that the Rockies would just release Cardullo after the surprising success he had the past two seasons, but this injury appears to be the reason why the Rockies restructured their agreement with the former independent league star. Cardullo latched back on with Colorado on a minor-league deal, so he'll continue to rehab his injury in the minors for the next couple months. More information on his progress should become clear as he reaches the next steps in his recovery process.

Cardullo has never really panned out for the Rockies over the past two seasons, hitting just .190 over 91 career major league at-bats. Despite his stellar numbers at the plate with Triple-A Albuquerque last season (.308/.367/.522 with 17 home runs), the Rockies have decided to move forward while clearing a spot on the 40-man roster. Cardullo was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Jenny Cavnar of Root Sports reports.
The former independent league star leveraged a strong spring training performance into an Opening Day roster spot, but he'll head back to the minors after batting just .143 in 28 regular season at-bats. If Cardullo finds success against minor-league pitching, he could return to Denver relatively soon, although the impending return of Ian Desmond (hand) may also make things too crowded for Cardullo to find his way back to the big leagues unless another injury strikes. German Marquez will take his place on the 25-man roster.

Rockies' Stephen Cardullo: Picks up RBI after late entry
Cardullo came into Wednesday's game in the fourth inning for Carlos Gonzalez (hand) and went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the Rockies' loss to the Dodgers.
The former independent leaguer has been used sparingly over the course of April, which likely hasn't helped him at the plate. After Wednesday's game, Cardullo is hitting just .154 on the season, and although he could see an uptick in playing time until Gonzalez is back to full health, it seems like a long shot that the 29-year-old will get regular opportunities against right-handed pitching.

Cardullo is in the Rockies' lineup Friday against the Dodgers, playing left field and batting seventh.
The righty hitter replaces Gerardo Parra as the Rockies go up against southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu. Cardullo mashed three home runs, including two grand slams, while driving in 15 runs during spring action, which helped him break camp on the big-league roster at least while David Dahl (ribs) is on the disabled list.

The former independent ball stud put together a monster spring, batting .379 with three home runs (two grand slams) and 15 RBI. Cardullo is blocked for playing time at first base by Mark Reynolds and in the outfield by Gerardo Parra, Carlos Gonzalez and eventually David Dahl (ribs), but his right-handed power bat will likely help him garner many pinch-hit opportunities, and given the thin Denver air at Coors Field, his power could play up even in a reserve role.

Cardullo is 14-for-45 (.311) with three home runs and 13 RBI in 23 Cactus League games.
Cardullo is in the thick of the race to garner an Opening Day roster spot left vacant following the injury to Ian Desmond (hand). He's making a strong case to fill that void, especially showing off his power by hammering two grand slams this spring. Prospect Jordan Patterson is also enjoying a strong spring performance, and Christhian Adames and Pat Valaika are both working out at first base to attempt to grab the spot for their own. However, Cardullo's torrid spring could lead the Rockies to give him a chance, especially since some of the other candidates have minor league options remaining, a luxury they don't have with the non-roster invitee Cardullo.

Cardullo is in the running to replace Ian Desmond (hand) at first base, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
After the Rockies signed Desmond, Cardullo's chances of making the major league roster seemed slim to none. However, given the non-roster invitee's strong return to affiliated baseball last season (.889 OPS, 17 home runs with Triple-A Albuquerque in 2016) and his stellar 1.012 OPS over 28 spring plate appearances, he's certainly producing enough to warrant a spot in the big leagues. However, Mark Reynolds, Jordan Patterson and Gerardo Parra are also in the mix for time at first base; all of them also have the versatility to play the outfield and are having successful springs. Reynolds seems to have a leg up on the starting job as of now, but Cardullo could work his way into an Opening Day roster spot if he continues to shine in the Cactus League.

He would have had a decent chance at making the big league roster out of camp prior to the Ian Desmond signing, but that now looks like a long shot. Cardullo hit .328/.401/.632 against lefties at Triple-A las season, and his destiny is likely that of a lefty-mashing bench bat.
