Yo Gabbert Gabbert is back for a third -- and perhaps final? -- season in Jacksonville. Jaguars coach Gus Bradley announced on Monday that Blaine Gabbert would be the team's starter when they open the regular season against the Chiefs.
Gabbert, who will also miss the remainder of the preseason with an injury, was battling Chad Henne for the starting job in Jacksonville.
“I thought he did a really good job through the entire [process] of staying focused,” Bradley said Monday.
The injury that will keep Gabbert out is a "small hairline fracture" on his right thumb that Gabbert sustained during his final play against the Jets in the preseason on Saturday.
“In two weeks, he should have a chance to come back and begin his preparation,” Bradley said of the injury.
Gabbert was Jacksonville's first-round pick in 2011, taken by since-fired GM Gene Smith in order to be the franchise quarterback for a long time. But just two-some years into Gabbert's tenure there's already ample concerns about whether or not he can even be a viable starter.
The former Missouri product looked very good against the Jets on Saturday, going 13-for-16 for 165 yards and a touchdown. But he's looked good in the preseason before and disappointed afterwards.
There's no longer anyone in the front office left from the old regime, either. Smith is gone, replaced by David Caldwell. Mike Mularkey, Gabbert's coach last year, was replaced by Bradley.
No one in Jacksonville is beholden to Gabbert. Which makes this likely his last shot at winning the city over before the team begins to look for another reboot option.
