Phil Costa suffered another in a long line of injuries this season, this one a severe ankle sprain Sunday against the Panthers. (US Presswire)

Starting C Phil Costa is out for the rest of the game with a severely sprained right ankle and possibly a dislocation, according to sources close to the Cowboys’ medical staff.

Costa suffered the injury in the second quarter when he got his feet tangled at the line of scrimmage. The play included a fumble recovery by the Panthers, and Costa tried to get up to make a tackle but limped toward the sideline. He was attended to for several minutes before being carted off the field.

He was replaced by Ryan Cook, who has been plagued by a hamstring injury for two weeks before being active this week.

Costa has been hampered by injuries all season, starting in training camp when he missed about four weeks with a back injury, only to return for the final preseason game. He went into the opener as the starting center but after three plays, aggravated his back injury and didn’t return for more than a month.

Last week, Costa played the entire game against Baltimore and arguably had the best game of his career, facing Ravens Pro Bowler Haloti Ngata and helped the Cowboys rush for 227 yards.

But Costa missed some time with a knee injury this week and now will likely be out for a considerable period, if not the rest of the season with this latest injury.
