Raiders hang on vs. Broncos

In a low-scoring slog, the Jimmy Garoppolo-led Raiders defeated the Broncos, 17-16, in Sean Payton's debut. Garoppolo finished 20-for-26 passing for 200 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Russell Wilson had a solid completion percentage (79.4%) but only managed 6.5 yards per completion.

Trailing by six late in the third quarter, Garoppolo did what he has been known for since becoming an NFL starter: find a way to win. In six plays, Garoppolo relied on several different pass-catchers to drive 75 yards and the game-winning score, which Jakobi Meyers hauled in with 6 minutes, 34 seconds to play. From there, the Las Vegas defense forced a three-and-out, and then its offense used the run game to run out the clock of a season-opening triumph.

Tua + Tyreek = FUEGO

In the Dolphins' 36-34 thrilling win in Week 1 against the Chargers:

  • Tua Tagovailoa: 28-for-45 passing, 466 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT
  • Tyreek Hill: 11 receptions, 215 yards, 2 TDs

This Dolphins duo has been incredible since teaming up at the start of last season, and they have been unbelievable in the 2023 season opener. How about two touchdown connections in the second half, including the game-winning score with fewer than two minutes to play? Just an electric QB-WR duo. Miami is going to be dangerous in the AFC.

Are the Rams back?

It's much too early to say that, but they're off to a great start after a hugely disappointing 2022 campaign. In handing the Seahawks a decisive 30-13 defeat, the Rams were one of three teams with at least 400 yards of total offense, which included 100 yards receiving from TuTu Atwell and fifth-round rookie Puka Nacua. Matthew Stafford finished with 334 yards passing without Cooper Kupp -- the All-Pro wideout out for at least the first four games on injured reserve -- while running backs Kyren Williams and Cam Akers combined for three touchdowns.

Everyone just assumes the 49ers will run away with the NFC West and the Seahawks will compete for a wild-card spot, but don't be surprised if Sean McVay and company are in the mix for the postseason down the stretch. That's how it looked Week 1, anyway.

Bad, good and more bad from J.C. Jackson

Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson gifted the Dolphins three points when his completely unnecessary shove resulted in a field goal seconds before halftime.

Then Jackson redeemed himself when his red-zone interception late in the third quarter kept the Chargers ahead.

But then he was left man-to-man with Tyreek Hill. You can probably assume what happened next (see below):

That's nine points Jackson has single-handedly given up, and while the interception was crucial, it doesn't make up for his failures -- which are a big reason why the Dolphins have a three-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Rodgers-less Packers still own Bears

The Packers closed as 1.5-point underdogs to the division rival Bears. Yes, the same Bears who have owned them for decades. Even without Aaron Rodgers, history has continued to repeat itself through three quarters, with the Packers holding a 24-6 advantage. Jordan Love hasn't been efficient in his debut as a starter (10-for-21 passing), but he's amassed 169 yards throughout the air and thrown two touchdowns. The biggest star in this game has been Aaron Jones, who's racked up 127 yards and two scores on his 11 touches.

'OH MY GOD!'

That was Geno Smith's reaction when he saw all-world defender Aaron Donald running full speed and unblocked to bury him into the ground. Smith, smartly, got rid of the ball quickly enough that Donald only gave him a shove afterwards. The pass fell incomplete, but more importantly, Smith lived (literally) to see another play.

Chargers' Williams returns after head injury evaluation

Star wideout Mike Williams left in the first half to be evaluated for a head injury after a gnarly hit from a Dolphins linebacker a few yards past the line of scrimmage. Good news for Los Angeles: He's back in the game for the second half.

Tua off to historic start

Tua Tagovailoa threw for 242 yards ... in the first half! He's on pace to break the Dolphins' single-season passing record, which Dan Marino (unsurprisingly) set with a 521-yard passing effort against the Jets in 1998. The dynamic duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have already combined for 169 yards on nine receptions, but it's River Cracraft and Raheem Mostert who have found the end zone for Miami.

Russ cookin' under Sean Payton

What a difference a head coach makes... I know, I know, it's only been one half of a 17-game season, but Russell Wilson looked a lot like his Seahawks self in the opening 30 minutes against the Raiders. He has just two incompletions on 19 attempts, 125 yards passing and touchdown throws to Lil'Jordan Humphrey and Courtland Sutton. Great start for Wilson in the Sean Payton era.

Patriots on the board!

It took a pick-six, a fumble and three punts, but the Patriots are on the scoreboard. Mac Jones completed the 10-play, 71-yard drive by hitting tight end Hunter Henry for the score -- much to the enjoyment of Tom Brady and team owner Robert Kraft. The Patriots still trail by 9, but they have an offensive pulse.

Ekeler eating

Austin Ekeler deserves to be one of the league's highest-paid RBs, and he's showing it in the Chargers' season-opener. A few highlights: 1) a one-yard touchdown, his 39th (!) since the start of the 2021 season, and 2) this 55-yard burst up the middle that set up Los Angeles' second score. It's only a quarter-and-a-half in, and Ekeler already has 88 yards from scrimmage.

DK dusts defender

Second-year defensive back Derion Kendrick had no chance against DK Metcalf. The Seahawks veteran wideout made Kendrick look SILLY with this filthy route that resulted in a 10-yard score to put Seattle back ahead.

Nightmare start for Patriots in front of Brady

The Patriots offense was a complete mess last year, but with Bill O'Brien back as the offensive coordinator, expectations are much higher this season. Welp, New England is instead off to the worst start possible.

Dealing with rainy conditions in Foxborough, Mac Jones' wobbler bounced off the hands of Kendrick Bourne and right into the lap of Darius Slay. From there, Slay burst down the left side, making Jones miss in the process, and went untouched into the end zone for the 70-yard interception return for a score.

The negative results weren't done. Two plays into the Patriots second drive, Ezekiel Elliott made a one-handed catch on a screen pass but immediately fumbled. The Eagles took over at the edge of the red zone and proceeded to score again, this time on a five-yard pitch-and-catch from Jalen Carter to Devonta Smith.

And the worst part of all of this for Patriots fans? Tom Brady is in attendance, as the team will honor him at halftime. Oof.

Jimmy G TD

How about this start for Jimmy Garoppolo? The Broncos tried an onside opening kickoff (because, uh, Sean Payton), but a penalty wiped away the recovery and instead gave the Raiders a short field. From there, Garoppolo led a 10-play, 44-yard drive during which he completed all three of his passes. The last one was a six-yard score to fellow newbie Jakobi Meyers.

First win for new ownership

It wasn't pretty, but the Commanders notched their first win under new owner Josh Harris by defeating the Cardinals, 20-16, on Sunday. First-round rookie Emmanuel Forbes Jr. clinched the victory with a pass breakup on fourth down to give Washington the ball back and seal the game.

Lamar to OBJ

It's been a quiet Ravens debut for Odell Beckham Jr., but his fourth-quarter catch is what Baltimore fans should expect a lot more of as he and Lamar Jackson gain more chemistry. OBJ got past his defender, Lamar lofted it over said defender's head and then OBJ made a beautiful over-the-shoulder grab. Pick up of 29.

First career sack!

The Texans don't look like they're going to beat the Ravens, but at least one of their top draft picks has shown his potential. Will Anderson Jr., the No. 3 overall pick, took down Lamar Jackson early in the fourth quarter for his first career sack.

Garrett gobbles up Burrow

Three points. The Bengals, one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL last year, have managed just a single field goal versus the division rival Browns. Desperate to make a comeback, Cincinnati went for it on fourth-and-4 from its own 31-yard line. Myles Garrett wasn't having it, however, taking down Burrow to ensure Cleveland would take over. Three plays later, Deshaun Watson put the finishing touchdowns on a would-be victory with a short touchdown pass to Harrison Bryant.

Carr's first Saints TD a big one

The Saints finally broke the field-goal fest late in the third quarter when Derek Carr hit Rashid Shaheed on a stop-and-go route for the easy 19-yard touchdown. It marked Carr's first passing score in New Orleans.

Insane scoop and score

Jaguars rookie RB Tank Bigsby thought the play was over after the ball was knocked out of Trevor Lawrence's hand on an apparent pass attempt. Only the play was never called dead! Heads up by both Zaire Franklin, who pushed Bigsby to knock the ball free, and DeForest Buckner, who scooped it up and rumbled 26 yards for the go-ahead score. It's one of the wildest scoop and scores you'll see.

Diontae Johnson injures hamstring, ruled out for Steelers

It's been a rough season opener for the Steelers. Not only are they down big versus the 49ers, but they've already lost a wide receiver to injury. Early in the third quarter, Diontae Johnson stayed down and held his hamstring after a 26-yard catch-and-run. He was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game.

J.K. Dobbins ruled out, feared to have torn Achilles

The Ravens already lost safety Marcus Williams with a shoulder injury, and now they're without J.K. Dobbins, who suffered an injury in the third quarter against the Texans. Shortly after, NFL Media reported that Baltimore fears its starting running back has tore his Achilles. He'll have an MRI to confirm, per Ian Rapoport. That's a devastating blow to Dobbins, who missed the entire 2021 season after tearing his ACL.

Bryce Young hates Jessie Bates III

The No. 1 overall pick has made two major mistakes Sunday, and both have been the result of Jessie Bates III. On both occasions, Bates cut in front of the Panthers pass-catcher for the turnover. Unfortunately for Young, he'll have to play Bates and the Falcons again later this year.

Steelers have life!

Pittsburgh's first five offensive drives resulted in ONE yard. Yes, a single yard in five possessions. It looked like the 49ers were going to completely run away from the Steelers. But then, right before the half, Kenny Pickett got it going in a big way. Like 12 plays, 95 yards drive big. And instead of having to settle for what would have been a disappointing field goal, the Steelers got seven after Pickett found tight end Pat Freiermuth for the short score.

Oh no Sam Howell

It has not been the first half Sam Howell or the Commanders were hoping for. It started off with a bang, as the second-year QB led Washington 91 yards on the second drive and hit Brian Robinson Jr. for a seven-yard touchdown to go ahead. Since then? Interception, Antonio Gibson fumble, punt, and then a horrible fumble from Howell that Cardinals linebacker Dennis Gardeck recovered and took in for the touchdown. Howell ended up finishing the first half 15 of 24 for 169 yards, a score and two turnovers. More importantly, the Commanders trail perhaps the least talented team in the NFL at halftime.

No contract, no problem

The Buccaneers did not reach a long-term deal with Mike Evans before his self-imposed deadline, meaning one of the most consistent WRs in the NFL is set to become a free agent next offseason. Despite Evans' likely disappointment, he's still producing in Tampa Bay. Having looked inept for most of the first half, the Buccaneers offense found life in the final minutes of the second quarter. To do so, Baker Mayfield found Evans over the middle for a 28-yard score.

Marshon Lattimore says 'Gimme dat'

When DeAndre Hopkins goes up for a ball, he almost always outjumps the defender and makes the catch. That wasn't the case here, as Marshon Lattimore made the interception over Hopkins to set up the Saints offense before halftime. Lattimore is a perennial Pro Bowler for a reason, and he showed why there.

Catch of the week

Yes, I know we're an hour into what I'm sure will be a chaotic NFL Sunday. But Zay Jones' touchdown catch was THAT good. I'll let you see it for yourself. (Oh, and what a throw from Trevor Lawrence, too.) Bravo all around.

More rookie TDs!

First-round rookies Anthony Richardson, Bijan Robinson and now Jordan Addison have scored either rushing or receiving touchdowns in their first halves of NFL football. Addison, the Vikings' No. 23 overall pick, showcased his speed by running past the disheveled Buccaneers defense for an easy pitch-and-catch from Kirk Cousins. Everyone knows about all-world wideout Justin Jefferson, but Addison could be the WR2 that makes the Minnesota offense even more dangerous.
