It looked like the Patriots were going to run Baltimore off the field early Sunday night, but things quickly fell apart and they ended up losing 31-30 on a last-second field goal. Now everyone is left to ponder what this team is made of after falling below .500 for the first time in 145 games.

Offense: C

It's hard to complain about a unit that scored 30 points and gained 396 yards, but the Patriots offense had a chance to win late in the fourth quarter and couldn't get the fourth first down it needed to put the game out of reach. That's unacceptable for a team that spends so much time practicing situational football. The rest of the performance was solid outside of a questionable drive-killing reverse that resulted in a 13-yard loss in the second quarter. It was also curious that Rob Gronkowski only had two receptions for 21 yards.

Defense: C-

A solid start that began with two punts and an interception quickly fell apart as Baltimore scored on three consecutive possessions spanning the second and third quarters. The unit gave up 503 yards, couldn't get a stop when it needed down the stretch and put Baltimore in position to win the game when Devin McCourty was whistled for a 27-yard pass interference penalty on the final drive. The score would be lower, but the performance was good enough to give the team a chance to win.

Special teams: B

Special teams bounced back after an abysmal performance against Arizona last week. Stephen Gostkowski was 3 for 3 on field-goal attempt and Zoltan Mesko punted well, booting one ball 56 yards. The kick coverage unit holds this grade down after allowing a return of 36 yards.

Coaching: C

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels continues to make questionable decisions. The aforementioned reverse resulted in a punt and Baltimore took the lead on the next possession. It wasn't the turning point of the game, but it was a momentum killer. He seems determined to put his own stamp on things by going in the face of what is proven to work.
