Texans name Wade Phillips interim coach
A few days after Gary Kubiak collapsed on the field, the Texans have said defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is the interim.
With the scary episode that Texans coach Gary Kubiak suffered last Sunday -- he's since returned home after his mini-stroke -- defensive coordinator Wade Phillips took over the head coaching spot in the second half of the loss to the Colts.
And not that this is any kind of surprise, but here's what the Texans said Wednesday.
While Phillips has had a wonderful career as a defensive coordinator, his head coaching career has been mixed, mostly because he hasn't led any of his teams to a deep playoff run. He took over for his father Bum after he resigned from the Saints job in 1985, and Wade Phillips went 1-3. After going 16-16 in two seasons in Denver, Phillips had two strong year with the Bills in 1998 and 1999 (a combined record of 21-11) before an 8-8 struggle in 2000 got him fired.
He also was an interim with the Falcons in 2003 before spending 2007-10 as the Cowboys head coach, going 34-22 before Jerry Jones fired him.
Overall, Phillips has been successful as a head coach in the regular season, accumulating a .571 winning percentage -- a good bit better than his father's .519, actually. But for whatever reason, he's only won playoff game in his career.
At this point, it's unclear when Kubiak will return.
“I want to thank my family, the McNair family, the Texans organization, the doctors and staff at Houston Methodist and the entire Houston community for all the love and support we have received over the past three days," Kubiak said in a statement released Tuesday. "I’ve been through an ordeal and my focus now is to get back to good health. Doctors have told me I will make a full recovery but we have not determined when I will be cleared to return to the office. Again, thank you for the support and concern.”
