  • Falcons' Jacob Tuioti-Mariner: One-year extension

Tuioti-Mariner signed a one-year extension with the Falcons on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

The 24-year-old saw an increase in opportunities during the 2020 campaign, which is what allowed his snap count to double (373 defensive snaps). Tuioti-Mariner will likely continue his usual rotational role this coming season, now that he's officially staying with the team.

  • Falcons' Jacob Tuioti-Mariner: Tallies 31 tackles in 2020

Tuioti-Mariner notched one tackle during Atlanta's 44-27 Week 17 loss to the Buccaneers, bringing him to a total of 31 tackles, one sack, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble to close out the 2020 campaign.

Tuioti-Mariner went without a start in 2020 after registering the first of his NFL career Week 17 of last season. He did, however, suit up for all 16 of the Falcons' contests this year, earning a workload of 32.4 defensive snaps per game. The UCLA standout spent 2018 and much of 2019 on Atlanta's practice squad. Tuioti-Mariner has since proven capable of establishing a consistent role on the active roster, as he now prepares to become an exclusive rights free agent in March.

Tuioti-Mariner suffered a head/neck injury during Sunday's 21-16 loss to the Saints and was labeled questionable to return, Jason Butt of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Tuioti-Mariner has been garnering more opportunities at defensive end since the team parted ways with Takkarist McKinley (groin) on Nov. 9. Tuioti-Mariner generated a team-high six tackles, including one sack and two fumble recoveries, during Sunday's 43-6 win against the Raiders.

Tuioti-Mariner initiated his impressive outing with a recovery from a Foyesade Oluokun sack-forced fumble on the Raiders' second offensive possession of the contest. Four Las Vegas drives later, Tuioti-Mariner sacked Derek Carr himself, stripping the ball out and recovering to help Atlanta tack on three more points in the final minute of the second quarter. Opportunities have increased for the 24-year-old in recent weeks with Takkarist McKinley (groin) being waived by Atlanta on Nov. 9.

  • Falcons' Jacob Tuioti-Mariner: Upgraded to full participant Friday

Tuioti-Mariner (elbow) was able to practice without restrictions Friday after logging a limited session Thursday, Jason Butt of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The 24-year-old has seen an uptick in usage the past two games with Takkarist McKinley (groin) and Dante Fowler (ankle) each missing time due to injury. Tuioti-Mariner was on the field for 25-plus defensive snaps Weeks 2 and 3 after seeing just one such snap in the opener. Fowler has begun trending toward a Week 4 appearance with a limited practice Friday, but McKinley remains questionable after sitting out for a second consecutive session. Tuioti-Mariner seems the most likely of the three to play given his practice status, and if Fowler and/or McKinley prove unable to go, Tuioti-Mariner may be in line for some extra snaps.
