For the next outdoor game in LA between the Kings and Ducks, the NHL has made it clear that it's going to be different. One recurring statement has been that you will know you're in Southern California and they weren't saying that because the ice will melt.

The question is how was the NHL planning to achieve this besides palm trees in the background and the presence of Vin Scully at the game? Well apparently they found the answer: by turning the outfield into a beach volleyball court.

Usually at the Winter Classic there are kids playing hockey on a smaller rink off to the side. Not in California, in California they play beach volleyball. (A roller hockey rink will also be on the field by home plate.A swimming pool would be a nice touch.)

If the NHL wants different, beach volleyball in the outfield of a baseball stadium at a regular-season hockey game in a warm climate is definitely different.
