The Nashville Predators became the first team to advance to the conference semifinals by ousting the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5, 2-1. The winning goal was scored by the original Predators David Legwand in the opening seconds of the third period.

And that might not have even been his best play of the series.

In Game 4 with the game locked in a scoreless tie at that point, Legwand was part of a mad scramble in front of the Predators net, trying to keep the clean sheet for Pekka Rinne. He took a big risk by covering the puck in the crease with his glove and then used his brains to get away with it.

Warning: Red Wings fans, this will only make you more upset than you probably already are.

As you can hear the broadcasters explaining, if Legwand was caught covering the puck in the crease with his glove it would have been a penalty shot for the Red Wings. We saw that happen in the closing seconds of this year's Winter Classic. So it was gutsy from Legwand.

But the coverup? Well that was a thing of beauty. I don't know if Rinne was aware of what Legwand had done or not, but I like the way that he played it up too, showing the referees the inside of his pads to prove the puck wasn't hiding in there.

What I am wondering is how the referee didn't see that at all. He's sitting on top of the cage.

Maybe Legwand has a career as a magician when he's done playing.
