Georgia basketball's tumultuous 2021-22 season has seemingly steered into more turmoil as the Bulldogs enter the stretch run of the regular season. After a halftime incident that involved assistant coach Wade Mason and director of player development Bryan Fish reportedly turned physical last week in UGA's game against LSU, Mason, according to multiple reports, has been suspended with pay. And now coach Tom Crean's seat seems to be warming as well.
Georgia's Athletic Association on Saturday issued a statement declining to comment directly both on the incident and on Crean's future, saying only that reports related to athletics personnel ranged from "completely inaccurate to incomplete and premature."
"The incident in question was reported properly as required by university policies and is under review," the statement said. "We will comment if and when appropriate."
However, Crean was scheduled to meet with the media on Friday before his appearance was canceled less than an hour before it was set to begin, adding to speculation about his job security. After the canceled appearance, SB Nation reported that UGA may be looking into firing Crean for cause after failing to properly report the incident.
Crean and UGA are 6-20 on the season leading into Saturday's home game against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs are assured a second losing season in four seasons under Crean, who is 47-69 since taking over the program in 2018.
