Weeks has become a free agent after refusing an outright assignment to Triple-A El Paso, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
He played in 17 games for the Padres in 2016, spending a significant portion of the season on the DL with a hamstring injury. Weeks posted a .306/.405/.500 line in 10 games at Triple-A, and he'll likely end up in a competition for a roster spot elsewhere with a minor league deal this winter.
