Padres veteran reliever Jose Valverde has informed the club he will opt out of his minor-league contract, and the team will grant him his release, according to MLB.com on Thursday.

Valverde, 37, logged an ERA of 5.66 and 23:10 K:BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings before he was cut by the Mets last season. He has not had an ERA lower than 5.59 since 2012. He is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA over 8 2/3 innings of work this spring.
