  • Castillo went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored Wednesday against the Cubs. Castillo led off the second inning to tally his fifth home run of the season. After going 27 games without a long ball, Castillo has gone yard three times in his last seven starts. He had begun to lose playing time to Hoy Park -- both Park and Castillo were in the lineup with Ke'Bryan Hayes getting a day off Wednesday -- but Castillo could begin to earn back playing time given his strong stretch at the dish.

  • Castillo is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs. On the bench against a right-handed starting pitcher (Matt Swarmer) for the second straight day, Castillo looks like he'll have to settle for a short-side platoon role for the Pirates, who are giving the lefty-hitting Hoy Park a look at the keystone. Castillo's opportunities could become more scarce within the next week or so, as fellow infielders Kevin Newman (groin) and Josh VanMeter (finger) will start rehab assignments at Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday and could be activated from the injured list after playing a few games in the minors.

  • Castillo is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs. Pittsburgh called up top prospect Oneil Cruz from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier Monday and will have him make his first start with the big club at shortstop, where he'll likely handle an everyday role moving forward. As a result, Castillo no longer has a path to steady playing time at the position, but he could get a look at second base while the likes of Josh VanMeter (finger) and Kevin Newman (groin) are on the shelf. However, it'll be Hoy Park who picks up the start at the keystone Monday after slugging a solo home run in Sunday's 4-3 win.

  • Castillo went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run, a walk and a sacrifice fly in a 7-5 loss to the Giants on Saturday. The 24-year-old rookie had a nice four-RBI night at the plate, hitting a sacrifice fly off Alex Wood in the first, and then belting a three-run home run off him in the third. The second baseman had been ice cold in June, hitting only .075 over 40 at-bats. He did hit for a respectable average in the minors last year, and he is projected to hit about 30 to 40 points higher than his current .195 average on the season.

  • Castillo went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Monday against the Cardinals. Castillo opened the scoring in the second inning with his third home run of the season. That ended a 27-game homerless drought, and he's struggled mightily in general during that stretch by hitting just .158 with four RBI and six runs scored. He could be a candidate to lose playing time when either Kevin Newman (groin) returns or Oneil Cruz is recalled, but Castillo remains the Pirates' primary shortstop for the time being.
