Zac Gallen had a fantastic season and received some deserved votes for the Cy Young Award as he helped carry the Diamondbacks to their improbable World Series run. Most of his performance indicators were right in line with 2022 but better run support helped raise his wins while a near full-run jump in his ERA can be excused by the BABIP regression which we expected would come after his rather fortunate .237 BABIP in 2022. Simply put, there is not a performance issue to be concerned with as much as a workload concern. Gallen ended up throwing 243.2 innings in 2023, which was almost exactly double what he threw just two seasons ago. He managed a 52% increase in workload just fine from 2021 to 2022, but now we add another 32% increase in workload along with the stress of working in the postseason for the first time and we cannot help but wonder about the impact of that for 2024. 2023 was an excellent season, but it would not surprise us to see Gallen take a step back this season.

    Manager Torey Lovullo said after Wednesday's 8-0 loss to the Dodgers that Gallen (hamstring) will make his next start Tuesday against the Reds, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Gallen was removed from his most recent start last Friday with a hamstring injury. The Diamondbacks had tentatively planned for Gallen to start the series finale with the Dodgers, but he ultimately needed more time to heal up from the injury. Arizona will skip his turn in the rotation entirely this week, but he'll tentatively line up for two starts the following week. After his matchup with the Reds, Gallen would then be slated for a start May 12 in Baltimore.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Start pushed back

    Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Gallen (hamstring) won't start Friday as scheduled in an effort to provide him extra rest, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. The right-hander was originally set to start Wednesday, but Tuesday's starter Jordan Montgomery was pushed back a day since the start time was delayed two hours. Gallen apparently isn't having any issues with the hamstring injury that surfaced in his previous start, but Lovullo has still decided to give his ace some extra rest. The earliest Gallen will take the mound is Sunday versus the Padres, but it's possible he gets some additional time, as team off days Thursday and Monday give Arizona some flexibility.

Jung Hoo Lee hit Gallen's second pitch in the bottom of the first inning for a home run, and the Giants wound up plating a couple runs on four hits in the opening frame. Patrick Bailey also took Gallen deep in the fifth, representing the first two long balls the righty has surrendered this season. While he walked just one batter, Gallen threw three wild pitches in this one, so he just seemed a tad off in general.     Gallen (3-0) threw six shutout innings in a win over the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Gallen continued his excellent start to the season with his second scoreless outing in his last three starts. The Cardinals were able to scatter four hits against him and their only threat came in the second with bases loaded and one out, but Gallen was able to escape without any harm by striking out Brandon Crawford and getting Mike Siani to ground out. Five of his seven strikeouts came from his knuckle curve, as he registered 11 whiffs on the afternoon. He's allowed one run or fewer in three-of-four starts so far and boasts an excellent 1.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 22 innings. He'll look to keep things rolling his next time out on the road against the Giants.
