Bergman agreed to a minor-league contract Wednesday with the Mariners and will report to Triple-A Tacoma, Tacoma radio broadcaster Mike Curto reports. Bergman failed to win an Opening Day roster spot with the Cubs coming out of spring training and was granted his release in March. After taking some time to assess his options, Bergman will return to the organization where he spent the past two seasons. The right-hander logged three appearances with the big club in 2018 but saw the overwhelming share of his action at Tacoma, where he compiled a 5.08 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 141.2 innings.... Christian Bergman: Let go by Cubs
Bergman was released by the Cubs on Friday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. Bergman was reassigned to minor-league camp last Saturday after allowing five runs on seven hits over 4.2 spring innings. The 30-year-old gave up nine runs -- including four homers -- in three appearances (two starts) with the Mariners last season.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Christian Bergman: Banished to minor-league camp
The Cubs reassigned Bergman to their minor-league camp Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. Bergman had three appearances (two starts) with the Mariners in 2018, compiling a 5.79 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 14 innings. He didn't fare much better during a more extended stint in the Pacific Coast League (5.08 ERA, 1.47 WHIP in 141.2 innings) and will be little more than organizational pitching depth in the high minors for the Cubs this season.... Cubs' Christian Bergman: Latches on with Cubs
Bergman signed a minor-league contract with Chicago including an invitiation to spring training, Mariners Minors reports. Bergman was let go by the Mariners at the end of the 2018 campaign, so he'll aim for a better outcome with the Cubs. His time in the major leagues has been limited so far in his career, as he's posted a 5.59 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 130 punchouts over 215.2 frames across stops in Colorado and Seattle.... See More ... Mariners' Christian Bergman: Sent back to Triple-A
Bergman was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. Bergman spent just three days on Seattle's roster, allowing four runs in 2.2 innings Friday against the Dodgers. Matt Festa was called up from Double-A Arkansas in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Returns to big leagues
Bergman was recalled by the Mariners on Wednesday. Bergman is up to take the roster spot which belonged to James Paxton, who hit the disabled list with a forearm contusion. It's unclear if he'll also be taking Paxton's spot in the rotation or if that job will go to Felix Hernandez. The fact that Bergman was called up five days before Paxton's next turn suggests that he'll likely up in a relief role, as it would be a waste of a roster spot to call up a starter just to have him sit on the bench for several days.... Mariners' Christian Bergman: Sent down
Bergman was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. This only makes sense, as Bergman just pitched Friday and he wouldn't have been of any use to Seattle over the final two days of the first half. Bergman was knocked around in Friday's start, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings, and it's uncertain if he will get another opportunity to start immediately out of the break, though it's possible with James Paxton (back), Marco Gonzales (calf) and Felix Hernandez (back) all banged up.... Mariners' Christian Bergman: Hit hard in Friday's spot start
Bergman (0-1) allowed five earned runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in a loss to the Rockies on Friday. Called up from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, Bergman predictably scuffled in Coors Field's thin air, getting only 39 of 66 pitches into the strike zone and allowing home runs to Charlie Blackmon and Trevor Story. The right-hander also failed to record a strikeout, and although he helped his own cause with an RBI single, it was a rocky night overall. With the All-Star break on the horizon and manager Scott Servais therefore afforded considerable flexibility with his short-handed starting rotation, Bergman appears destined to head back down to the Rainiers.... Mariners' Christian Bergman: Making spot start
Bergman will be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to start Friday's series opener against the Rockies at Coors Field, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. The start will be the second of the season for Bergman at the big-league level, with the first having come back against the Rangers on May 16 when he tossed seven shutout innings. This latest opportunity comes as a result of Felix Hernandez's placement on the disabled list earlier in the week with a back injury. In 18 starts for the Rainiers this season, Bergman has compiled a 6-6 record, 4.78 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 101.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Sent back to minors
Bergman was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday. Despite tossing seven scoreless innings in a spot start against the Rangers on Wednesday, Bergman will head back to Tacoma as the Mariners look to bring in a fresh bullpen arm (Ryan Cook). Given his strong performance Wednesday, Bergman should remain one of the team's top options when a starter is next needed.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Takes second loss of spring
Bergman (0-2) allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings in Monday's 8-4 Cactus League loss to the Angels. He struck out three. Although his final line appeared shaky overall, Bergman's troubles were primarily limited to his final inning and were exacerbated by a pair of errors behind him. The right-hander was signed to a minor-league contract in January and has the ability to serve as a long reliever, or as a starter in a pinch. In a 13-appearance stint last season with the Mariners -- his first with the club -- he logged eight starts and generated a 5.00 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB over 54 innings.... See More ... Mariners' Christian Bergman: Re-signs with Mariners
Bergman agreed to a minor-league contract with Seattle on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports. Bergman appeared in 13 games, making eight starts for the Mariners last year, posting a 5.00 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with a 33:15 K:BB in 54 innings. The right-hander posted similar numbers in Triple-A Tacoma, which is where he is expected to begin this upcoming campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Outrighted to Triple-A
Bergman was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday. The Mariners needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster with rosters expanding in September, and Bergman was the casualty. He has a 5.00 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 33 strikeouts in 54 innings in the big leagues this season.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Moves back up to Seattle
The Mariners selected Bergman's contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. Bergman will rejoin the Mariners to provide the team with a long-relief option after Dan Altavilla, who was optioned to Tacoma in a corresponding move, tossed three innings in Sunday's loss to the Yankees. With a 4.91 ERA and 5.8 K/9 in 51.1 innings this season, Bergman won't warrant much consideration in most fantasy leagues, especially since he won't be guaranteed any starts in his latest stint with the big club.... Mariners' Christian Bergman: Outrighted to Triple-A
Bergman cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday, Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. He was designated for assignment and unsurprisingly went unclaimed. His 4.91 ERA and 1.34 WHIP are not encouraging marks, and his 33 strikeouts in 51.1 innings are even more troublesome. He will serve as organizational depth going forward.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: DFA'd Tuesday
Bergman was designated for assignment Tuesday. One day after losing his spot on the major-league roster, Bergman has now lost his spot on the 40-man roster too. As a 29-year-old reliever who doesn't have great credentials at the majors, it doesn't appear he will draw much interest while on waivers.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Sent back to minors Monday
Bergman was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. The demotion has more to do with Bergman's lack of availability over the next few days than it does him being undeserving of a spot in the Seattle bullpen, as his performance in long relief during the weekend series with the Angels certainly proved the latter wasn't the case. He turned in five scoreless innings between his appearances Saturday and Sunday, yielding two hits and no walks while striking out three. He could be back up with the big club the next time the Mariners have a need for a fresh arm in the bullpen. In the meantime, flame-throwing right-hander Thyago Vieira was recalled from Tacoma in a corresponding move to fill the void in relief.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Dominant in long-relief outing
Bergman fired four scoreless innings in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Angels, allowing just one hit and recording three strikeouts. Just called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Bergman worked in both games over the weekend and fired a total of five scoreless frames. The 29-year-old right-hander endured a rough patch with the Rainiers several weeks back, leading to him being placed on waivers. However, he was impressive in a quality start against Nashville last Tuesday and has provided further reason for optimism in his first two outings with the Mariners.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Clears waivers, heads back to Tacoma
Bergman, who gave up 17 earned runs on 22 hits over his last two outings, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Bob Dutton of The News Tribune reports. The 29-year-old right-hander was completely decimated by Colorado Springs and Memphis in his last two starts, leading to the move to take him off the 40-man roster. Prior to the pair of disastrous outings, Bergman had actually produced a solid body of work with the Rainiers. Therefore, he still sports an impressive 8-3 record, although it's accompanied by an ERA that's ballooned from 3.34 to 5.10 due to the aforementioned meltdowns.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Christian Bergman: Optioned to minors
Bergman was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. With the Mariners preparing for Felix Hernandez's (shoulder) return from the 10-day disabled list Friday, Bergman will be dropped from the rotation to open up a spot for the former Cy Young Award winner. The Mariners called up Triple-A starter Andrew Moore in a corresponding move, but it's expected that he'll work in long relief initially. Bergman turned in three quality starts during his eight-start stint with the Mariners, but with nine- and 10-run blowups mixed in, he ended up submitting an ugly 5.70 ERA over that span....
