Athanasiou collected an assist in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Wild. Athanasiou set up Jeff Carter for a goal late in the third period. The 26-year-old Athanasiou now has seven points in 11 appearances this season. His career high in points is 54 in 76 games for the Red Wings in 2018-19, so it's possible he's rediscovered his scoring touch in Los Angeles.
Athanasiou scored a goal on three shots and added two PIM in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Blues. Athanasiou tallied at 16:08 of the second period, and that stood as the game-winning goal. It's his first point in three games since he rejoined the Kings after missing eight contests in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol. The 26-year-old forward has four goals and two helpers through 10 appearances this year. He's currently in a fourth-line role, but a hot streak could eventually make him a factor in the top six, likely at the expense of Adrian Kempe.
Athanasiou (not injury related) was activated from non-roster injured reserve Saturday. Athanasiou missed the last eight games while in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol. The Kings likely wouldn't have activated the 26-year-old without the intent of inserting him into the lineup for Saturday's game versus the Coyotes. If he's, indeed, in the lineup, Athanasiou should line up in the top six. He recorded three goals and two assists through the first seven games this year.
Athanasiou (not injury related) may be available versus Arizona on Saturday, Lisa Dillman of The Athletic reports. If Athanasiou is able to dress for Saturday's contest, it would be his first time back in the lineup since Jan. 26 versus Minnesota, a stretch of eight games on the shelf. The 26-year-old Ontario native should be considered a near-lock for a top-six role once given the green light, and he'll be looking to build upon his strong start to the year, as he's already registered three goals on seven shots and two assists in seven outings. In order to play, Athanasiou will need to be activated off non-roster injured reserve before rejoining the lineup.
Athanasiou (not injury related) won't be in the lineup for Thursday's game against Arizona. Athanasiou continues to miss action despite being activated from COVID-19 protocol, as he still needs to get back up to speed before returning to the lineup. Athanasiou's next chance to suit up in game action is in Saturday's game against Arizona.
