Left-handed relief pitcher J.C. Romero has been released by the Cardinals, the club announced Monday morning. Right-hander Eduardo Sanchez has been activated to take that vacant roster spot.

Romero, 35, had an utterly dreadful string of games to close out his Cardinals career. In his past three outings, Romero has given up six hits, nine earned runs and two home runs while recording only four outs. On the season, Romero has a 10.13 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in eight innings.

Romero has hung around for a while due mostly to being a lefty, but he's been effective in several stops recently -- especially his stint with the Phillies.

Sanchez, 23, had a 1.80 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 35 strikeouts in 30 innings last season for the Cardinals. He has struggled (6.08 ERA, 1.65 WHIP) in Triple-A this season, but obviously still has a high upside.
