The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals are beginning their 2022 seasons at Busch Stadium on Thursday. The Cardinals are seeking their first division title since 2019, while the rebuilding Pirates will simply hope to avoid having MLB's worst record. The pitching matchup will feature Pirates right-hander JT Brubaker and Cardinals veteran Adam Wainwright, making the first start of what's expected to be his final season.

This will mark the 31st time the Cardinals and Pirates have met on Opening Day. It's just the third time dating back to 2009, however, with Pirates winning two of those three contests.

Other information on the Pirates vs. the Cardinals, including live stream details, are below.

Storylines

Pirates: The Pirates remain a team entrenched in a rebuilding phase. They made several low-risk additions to their roster over the winter, including Daniel Vogelbach, Roberto Pérez, and Greg Allen, each of whom could start on Thursday. Better times would seem to be ahead for a Pittsburgh franchise that has become accustomed to that idea.

Cardinals: As we mentioned in the introduction, this is expected to be the final season of Wainwright's storied career. He's hardly alone in that respect, either, as both catcher Yadier Molina and newly signed designated hitter Albert Pujols are expected to hang up their cleats at season's end as well. This, then, will mark an historic year for the Cardinals and some of the most recognizable faces in recent franchise history.
