The Nationals are in first place, and will be buyers, but they probably aren't going to make a big splash at the deadline, according to natsinsider.com's Mark Zuckerman.

  • With Jayson Werth and Drew Storen expected to return from the disabled list, the Nationals don't have any major needs.
  • The team no longer needs a center fielder this season; as Werth, Bryce Harper and Michael Morse will make up their outfield. Since Adam LaRoche has performed well at first, the team can't acquire a center fielder and shift Morse back to the infield.
  • The bullpen is full of quality arms, and that will only get better once Storen comes back. Zuckerman noted that either Mike Gonzalez, Ryan Mattheus or Craig Stammen will lose their roster when Storen returns.
  • Acquiring another starter would push Ross Detwiler back to the bullpen for the time being. The team may not be willing to do that. The team still has John Lannan currently pitching in Triple-A.
  • A source inside the Nationals said the team will not empty the farm system for a big-name rental player.
  • The Nationals may look to acquire a veteran catcher, or maybe some help on the bench.
