Young Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon was activated from the disabled list in time to start Tuesday night against the Brewers at home (PIT 3, MIL 2). With one out in the top of the second, this frightening scene unfolded:

That could've gone much, much worse for Taillon, especially considering the ball left Hernan Perez's bat at 105 mph.

The shocking thing is that Taillon wasn't seriously hurt. The even more shocking thing is he stayed in the game and wound up logging a quality start and then some (6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 K, 0 BB).

As you would expect, there's a strict protocol for a player being allowed to continue playing after a potentially serious head injury ...

Here's hoping Taillon doesn't suffer any lasting effects from that shot. If nothing else, he now has one heck of a "baseball tough guy" story to tell for years to come.
