  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Pitches well in loss

Urena (1-3) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three over 6.2 innings, but he took the loss Sunday versus the Rockies. Urena pitched well, especially given the unfriendly venue, in his second start of the campaign. He's allowed four runs (three earned) with a 5:3 K:BB over 11.2 innings across two starts since moving into the rotation. Urena has a 3.62 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB over 32.1 innings across 12 appearances this season, though he began the year as a long reliever. If Nathan Eovaldi (groin) can return when first eligible May 18, Urena will likely return to the bullpen. A pair of off days (Thursday and Monday, May 20) could also allow the Rangers to get by with a four-man rotation temporarily, though Urena's pitched well enough that it wouldn't be odd to see him get another start.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Starting again Sunday

Urena will start Sunday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field. He'll make his second straight turn through the rotation after picking up a win in Tuesday's 15-8 victory over the Athletics while holding Oakland to two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over five innings. The Rangers should have starting roles available for both Urena and Jack Leiter until the team gets one of Nathan Eovaldi (groin), Max Scherzer (back) or Dane Dunning (shoulder) back from the injured list.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Earns win in first start

Urena (1-2) earned the win in Tuesday's 15-8 victory over Oakland, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two. Urena was able to minimize the damage through his first two innings before holding the Athletics to just one baserunner (who reached on an error) over his final three frames. The 32-year-old Urena had allowed four earned runs over 3.2 innings in his previous two appearances out of the bullpen. His ERA sits at 3.86 with a 1.29 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB this season. With Nathan Eovaldi (groin) working his way back from the IL, Urena will likely return to a relief role.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Starting Tuesday

Urena will start Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Urena will make his first start of the 2024 season, though he's given the Rangers length out of the bullpen at times through the first month of the campaign. He most recently worked three frames April 27 vs. Cincinnati and three innings April 18 against Detroit. He'll likely be called upon to eat anywhere from two to four innings Tuesday if all goes according to plan.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Hits first road bump in loss

Urena (0-1) picked up the loss to Houston on Saturday. He allowed five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one over 1.1 innings. Urena allowed his first runs of the season after throwing 9.1 scoreless frames. He ran into some bad luck during Houston's seven-run seventh inning. Three of the five hits allowed during the inning had expected batting averages of .040, .150 and .180.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Opens eyes in loss

Urena allowed one hit and struck out four over four scoreless relief innings in Monday's 10-5 loss to Houston. The Rangers had all sorts of pitching issues Monday, but Urena wasn't one of them. He entered to start the sixth inning with Texas losing 10-5 and held the Astros in check. Unfortunately for the Rangers, their high-powered offense was unable mount a challenge against a string of Houston relievers. An under-the-radar offseason addition, Urena's strong spring earned him a roster spot as a flexible member of the bullpen that can provide length. He's yet to allow a run over three outings -- two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts over 7.1 innings.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Selected to roster

The Rangers selected Urena's contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday. The veteran hurler held a 2.25 ERA and 14:3 K:BB over 16 innings this spring to win a spot on the Opening Day roster. Most of Urena's big-league experience is as a starter, but he will be used in long relief by the Rangers for the time being.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Makes Opening Day roster

Rangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday that Urena will be included on the Opening Day roster, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Urena had been attending spring training as a non-roster invitee, so he'll need to be officially added to the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster prior to Thursday's season opener versus the Cubs. The journeyman right-hander holds unremarkable numbers (4.89 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 6.9 K-BB%) while mostly serving in a starting role over parts of nine seasons in the big leagues, but he impressed as a reliever in the Cactus League with a 2.25 ERA and 14:3 K:BB over 16 innings.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Bidding for roster

Urena allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings in Thursday's start against the Diamondbacks. Urena made his second Cactus League appearance and first start. The 32-year-old right-hander is well down the list of starters in camp, but manager Bruce Boche isn't ruling out a flexible role for Urena if he pitches his way onto the Opening Day roster.

  • Rangers' Jose Urena: Invited to Rangers camp

Urena signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training. Urena made a combined 10 starts for the Rockies and White Sox last season, producing an ugly 6.45 ERA and 29:22 K:BB over 44.2 innings. The 32-year-old veteran will probably begin the 2024 season as part of Triple-A Round Rock's rotation.

  • White Sox's Jose Urena: Tosses quality start in loss

Urena did not factor into the decision, allowing four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Padres. He struck out three. Urena finished the season on a high note, working his way through the Padres lineup without difficulty. The right-hander finished his season with a 6.45 ERA and 1.61 WHIP across 44.2 innings with 29 strikeouts. Urena is expected to look for a new contract in free agency this winter.

  • White Sox's Jose Urena: Takes another loss

Urena (0-7) took the loss Tuesday, allowing seven runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks over four innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out two. Urena struggled to get through the Diamondbacks order Tuesday, allowing three runs across his first three innings of work before leaving the bases loaded in the fifth with no outs. Through nine starts, Urena has taken seven losses, and he's surrendered four or more earned runs in two of his last three appearances. Urena is lined up to make one more start this week, closing out the 2023 regular season for the White Sox at home against the Padres on Sunday.

  • White Sox's Jose Urena: Sharp in no-decision

Urena did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits over six innings against the Nationals. He struck out four. While he wasn't able to pick up the win Tuesday, it was an impressive performance from Urena, who held the Nationals scoreless through his first five innings. In three starts (16.1 innings) with Chicago, Urena's surrendered eight runs on 15 hits while tallying 15 strikeouts. Overall, the veteran right-hander is 0-6 with a 7.27 ERA across 34.2 innings between the White Sox and Rockies this season. Urena is currently scheduled for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks in his next outing.

  • White Sox's Jose Urena: Remains winless

Urena (0-6) took the loss against Minnesota on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings. Urena gave up a pair of solo shots in the fourth inning, but those were the only runs he gave up through six frames. Things fell apart for him in the seventh, however, as he allowed four straight one-out hits that led to four runs, with Kyle Farmer's two-run homer being the biggest blow and marking the end of his outing. Urena has been tagged with the loss in all but one of his seven appearances this season, compiling an ugly 8.48 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 20:16 K:BB over 28.2 frames.

  • White Sox's Jose Urena: Takes loss in White Sox debut

Urena (0-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over four innings against the Tigers. He struck out three. In his first big-league action since April 23, Urena fired 75 pitches and limited the damage to one run, which came on an infield single in the second inning. However, the White Sox lineup failed to provide adequate run support and the righty was tagged with his fifth loss of the year. The 31-year-old compiled a 9.82 ERA, 2.24 WHIP and 6.9 BB/9 across 18.1 innings in five April starts with the Rockies and posted a 5.60 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 3.4 BB/9 across 88.1 minor-league innings this year before getting promoted by Chicago. His season-long ERA now sits at 8.46, marking the seventh time in nine MLB seasons that Urena has posted an ERA north of 5.00 in his career. If he remains in the rotation, he is likely to make his next start at home against the Twins.

  • White Sox's Jose Urena: Contract selected ahead of start

Urena's contract was selected as expected Saturday ahead of his scheduled start against the Tigers. Urena opened the year in the Rockies' rotation but didn't last a month before being designated for assignment, having posted a 9.82 ERA and 9:14 K:BB across five starts. He spent most of the middle part of the season pitching for Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals system, where he struggled to a 6.31 ERA. He could remain in Chicago's rotation the rest of the year with Michael Kopech moving to the bullpen, but he's unlikely to be a usable option in many fantasy leagues.

  • White Sox's Jose Urena: Joining big-league rotation

The White Sox will call Urena up from Triple-A Charlotte to start Saturday's game against Detroit, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. If Urena is able to turn in a decent performance against the Tigers, it's possible he remains in Chicago's rotation down the stretch, as Michael Kopech has been moved to the bullpen. Urena has put up a 3.38 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 21.1 innings in Triple-A since signing with the White Sox in August, but his 5.77 ERA in the majors since 2022 makes the 31-year-old a risky fantasy option.

  • Jose Urena: Released by Nationals

The Nationals released Urena on Thursday. He signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals in May and registered a 6.31 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 15 starts for Triple-A Rochester. Urena was released by the Rockies earlier this year after walking more batters (14) than he struck out (nine) in five big-league starts across 18.1 innings.

  • Nationals' Jose Urena: Signs minor-league deal

Urena signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Wednesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Urena was released by the Rockies last week after posting a 9.82 ERA and 2.24 WHIP across 18.1 innings this season. He'll report to Triple-A Rochester, where he'll join the rotation and wait for a call from the major-league club. Given the state of the rebuilding Nationals' roster, he'll probably get one eventually.

  • Jose Urena: Released by Rockies

Urena was released by the Rockies on Thursday, per the MLB transaction log. Urena was designated for assignment Tuesday and unsurprisingly went unclaimed on waivers. He has posted a 9.82 ERA and 2.24 WHIP across 18.1 innings this season.
