Broncos safety Quinton Carter was arrested Saturday when officals at the Texas Station casino in north Las Vegas alleged he added money to his wagers while playing craps after the dice had been rolled, the Associated Press reported. Carter, who played prep football at Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas, was charged with three counts of a fraudulent act in a gaming establishment, according to the AP. Each charge carries a possible six-year prison sentence.
Carter, a three-year veteran, went on injured reserve in late-September after persistent pain required him to undergo surgery on his left knee for the second time in four months. He suffered the knee injury late in the 2011 regular season but managed to have interceptions in the playoffs against the Steelers and Patriots. Then in July, doctors determined the knee injury was more severe than initially diagnosed when Carter suffered a pulled hamstring.
“It's a setback, but to come back without a limp or anything, I think it will help me out to be a better player,” Carter said last summer.
Carter, 24, has a history of legal trouble. He also faces a charge for failure to complete counseling after he pleaded guilty to a 2011 misdemeanor for possession of marijuana. The Broncos are looking into the situation, a team spokesman told the AP.
Carter has two years remaining on his four-year, $2.495 million rookie contract.
